98 XJ8 p1260/BCM Symptoms
Hello Guys, I'm new to Jaguar but not new to working on cars as a hobby. In NOV I purchased a beautiful 1998 Vanden Plas Blue metallic with ivory interior, 67k miles. I had Jaguar in Columbus go over whole car, replaced power steering cooler, flushed brakes and aligned. Since then I have replaced pwr steering pump, rear view mirror, battery, antenna, and relay for high stoplight(was missing) . Drove car from OH to VA no problems. Few weeks went by small trips no issues. Came out one day and car was no crank, warning display reading "hood open, washer fluid low", and red security light blinking. Read up and thought since car sat, maybe low voltage, took battery back to Advance but just bit low not defective. Came home installed battery and problem gone. I set off on an 8 hr trip, stopped for gas, I was weary to shut car off so left running and filled up. Got in, red light by shifter blinkng and locked in park. Went into Loves bought screw drivers, overrode shift lock and was on my way. This is about 3 months ago. Since then I have cleaned or checked all grounds I could find and did notice coax connection to security module was loose, tightened with great hope, but still having the problem every few trips, short long doesn't matter. I noticed when I'm on highway, if its about to act up the seatbelt light starts blinking, then security light then either goes away or I lose headlights, turn signals etc. I have never had a beep or light if I drive without seatbelt incidentally. Anyway I disconnected drivers side seat belt
latch connector to see if any effect. Next time it acted up I had the blinking seatbelt sign and a chime which was new. But still same otherwise. I haven't really had the no start situation often, more so the issues while driving. Plenty of trips nothing. I even pulled the stop relay mentioned above thinking prev owner had it out due to circuit fault causing this issue but no change. Several code scans on Autel(attached pdf) : Always P1260 and Instrument Pack : U1260 SCP (+) circuit fault and U1261 (-) circuit fault. If I scan it while acting up I have seen BPM : No Response.
So is a periodic short pulling the BCM network down or bad BCM or SLM. I read a thread where someone add an additional ground to BCM which is my next task.
Wiring in car is like new, no signs of corrosion. I have 2 working keys and fobs, it happens with either key in use. No check engine light and usually no error codes when happens, except messages about hood open/washer fluid low , saw that twice so far.
I ordered 2 each SLM and BCM on ebay. The part # for both match mine, SLM LNC2600HD. Pondering getting those programmed and swapping. (Does SLM need programming or just in car fob matching procedure?)
Gonna add the 2nd ground to BCM tonight, I will link a thanks to that thread, navigating forums also beginner!
Any suggestions appreciated! Any recommendations on online programming services for modules would be helpful too.

Call Rob at Abacus Racing in Norfolk (757 363 8878): Abacus is the local JLR specialist (Checkered Flag Jag will not work on cars over ten years old). They can check it and determine if you need to renew the SLCM (no software needed if the VCAT matches) or BCM. You can always resell the units on eBay if not necessary.
Abacus is off Rt 13 (Northampton Blvd, just before the CBBT) on Baker Road (take I 64 towards Richmond, get off at the Ikea exit/Rt 13 N).
Alternatively, check the ground and battery connections in the trunk; assure there is no water under the SLCM causing grounding issues (SLCM is underneath the boot fuse box next to the battery); check both fuse boxes in the bonnet for water and/or rust; check the false bulkhead connector on the right side of the engine bay for corrosion.

Thank you, I actually have been to Abacus once I believe when they had a dyno. I will swing by there and talk to them soon. Trunk nice and dry, Where exactly is the connector in the engine bay you referred to ? The one on the firewall looked good.
