Default What Battery Type?

Got an "All Weather" Deltran Battery Tender. The first instruction is to not subject to rain or snow. Go figure. It will charge either a lead type or Lithium battery but you must select which before using. I've looked all over the Jump leads terminal box and can't even find the battery! Nor have I found any indication as to which battery is installed in my car. The owners manual says the battery is to be changed only by "Qualified Personnel." I guess that leaves me out. Would someone please tell me which battery this car has? If I don't respond promptly I am so sorry. I'm a certified techtard and I will be surprised if this even posts. In any case thank you folks for the help you have offered so far.

Your car has an AGM lead-acid battery. The battery is on the floor of the trunk, and there’s an easily removed panel over it.

There are a number of threads here about how to install a battery maintainer, so you’ll want to learn how to ‘search’ the forum. It’s preferable to not connect the maintainer straight to the battery terminals, as this would bypass the Battery Management System (BMS) sensor that’s integrated into the ground lead that connects to the battery.

One option is to connect it to the ‘jump points’, on the right side of the engine bay (looking forward.) Check you Owner’s Handbook for more info on the jump point.

Also, some battery maintainers/tenders have an AGM setting and some don't but those that don't usually have at least a lead/acid setting.
I have used the same maintainer for the whole nearly 10 years of F-Type ownership now with zero problems and it is one of those with no AGM setting so I have just used the lead/acid setting.

As you look into the trunk you may have a flat cover over the small cubby. The battery cover is to the left of that cubby. If you lift the cubby out you'ff find the locations to which you can connect the battery maintainer, assuming you want convenient plug and play connectivity. As said above, lots of threads about fitting those connections.

Come back with any further questions you have.

Thank all of you! I suspected lithium would typically be mostly or only in EV vehicles so I don't have to worry about that. And hopefully I never will. You folks are the best.

Still trying to navigate the forum. I was on the Superformance forum years ago and don't think I ever mastered that one.

There are lithium batteries to replace lead-acid types. They are considerably lighter, and so will your wallet be after purchase. For many here, it's worth it.

Back to the chargers:

I have a motorcycle lithium battery (in a motorcycle) and I have a charger for that. It's specifically for Lithium batteries and has no settings. For my cars, I have another for lead-acid batteries that has four settings: motorcycle, car, motorcycle AGM, car AGM. AGM is "Absorbent Glass Mat." Imagine a saturated sponge instead of liquid. For trunk-mounted batteries and motorcycles this is important because even if the battery casing is cracked in a collision or tipped over it won't leak sulfuric acid. That's a pretty simplified explanation, but they need to be charged at different rates.

I haven't used a charger that is good for both lithium and lead-acid and am surprised that with that capability, it doesn't also have a third setting for AGM.

If you'll be using your occasionally, clips to the jump points under the hood are easiest. If you plan on using it to maintain the battery on a more permanent basis, installing a pigtail so you can just plug and unplug is a better bet. I just installed on in my trunk.
