Default water leak in driver footwell, possible sources?

74 XJ12 Series II :

I cleared the AC drain line and water flows from it using the AC. I don't see any apparent leaks from outside the car from rain/washing.

But there is still an accumulation of water that drips out on the driver side onto my feet and I can hear water sloshing in that general area in middle of the car. It really drips out accelerating and when the nose of the car is elevated.

Any insights/knowledge anybody has?

And I should add that the water feels ice cold so i'm assuming it's from the AC system.

If the duckbill drains on the engine side of the firewall are clogged then rainwater can accumulate in the air intake plenum and eventually find its way into the HVAC case.

But.....

The two condensation drains should carry this water away as well as a/c condensate.

Sounds like your drains have clogged again....which wouldn't be entirely surprising if there's a lot of debris in the bottom of the HVAC case

Cheers

Agree with Doug 100%. The A/C drain tray, from which the drain each side is fed, is flat and gets dust and stuff in it. poking the drains free unblocks them, but then because the tray is so flat that there is no real head on the drain tubes, this stuff sloshes about and immediately blocks the drains again.
So just keep on poking the drains free and eventually the water accumulation will stop. The tray is completely inaccessible from the inside of the car and can only be cleaned as a dash-out, A/C unit out job, AFAIK.

My A/C drains were plugged when I bought the car and with advice from the Forum I cleared them as I serviced the HVAC. Another possibility is around the lower edge of the windscreen, famous for rusting. Pictures attached of mine before repair.

thanks for that insight, I was just about to ask if there is a way to get inside to clean it.

Thanks Dave, I had my windshield out for painting several years ago and was surprised to find no rust. I DID find that the seal failed between the pedal box and the car body but I've fixed that.

Your comment and Greg's form a pretty formidable consensus. I'll just have to keep cleaning and blowing.

Am I crazy, but I swear my car only has one drain? On the driver side? 1974 series II

It has two; but one tube may have dropped out, in which case that would explain the drips!

I went looking for the passenger side tube and found it. I didn't see the hose in the transmission tunnel from underneath and then its hidden behind the servo/servo cover. But it is there and is still attached and going through a floor grommet.

I haven't checked to if it's clogged but I'm suspecting it is because yesterday I had the car parked with the passenger side lower and no water came out. Then turned the car around with driver side lower and it drained.

Doh.

Will report back!

Well, there are two drains, but the idiot that did the drivetrain swap on my car (me) covered up the passenger one with heat reflective material.

the passenger side drain tube didn’t extend very far past the grommet and I think I musta thought it was just a regular rubber grommet and went right over it. The drain tube on the driver side extends down several inches and had a heat shield on it so I didn’t miss that one.

I cut away the heat shield, which did require removing an exhaust pipe, but the drain was clear and glorious condensate started flowing.
