Mikey I just checked for where I used to live and the highest price was 1.319GBP/L and the lowest 1.299GBP/L
At today's exchange that is 2.083USD/L X 3.785L/US Gal = 7.88USD/US Gal.

If I calculated correctly. :-)

Durham tonight (25th January 2013) - Four Star is £1.329 per litre ($2.10)

The £1.50 per litre barrier is getting closer with next week's increase in duty.

Exclamation Sad, so sad!

You drive a British car, giving money to the economy and they want more, more and more.
When will the powers that be concentrate on the real issues instead of raising money for the coffers to pay out in other ways!
The humble tax paying motorist is taxed and taxed again!!
Conspiracy, of course, it's the easy way out!
Oooh and don't be done either, I heard of a station in Aberdeen giving short measures and they just added the short measure on to the next motorist! The poor guy didn't even realise! When the issue was raised, the manager said that the council check the guages every 2 weeks! Is that not a get~out or what?
Take care out there, it's not rip~off Britain surely?
Stu

Owwwwwwwwwwww! Next US-based list member to complain about his prices gets a smack!

$1.31 CDN (approx. $1.33 USD) per litre here for 95 RON fuel.

Mike,

It's swings and roundabouts.

We get hit hard on fuel but US parts prices can be terrifying. Even worse, some of the reports I've read about the import duty Canadian members pay on parts from the US adds a major percentage.

However. we're all better off than our Australian, New Zealand, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish members who pay up to three times as much for used Jaguars.

Tax comes in many forms but we all get hit!

A comment on that if I may, as it's one of my 'pet peeves'. There essentially is no special 'duty' on car parts brought in from the US. We do pay the equivalent of a VAT, but that would have to be paid no matter where or how we bought the parts. Province of Ontario where I live is 13%. Other provinces are higher or lower

What does happen and where people get confused, is when a shipping company such as UPS or FedEx handles the package from seller to recipient including the trans border phase. By default, they tack on a 'custom's brokerage fee' which can often equal or surpass the value of the goods purchased. Even if though there is no duty payable, and only VAT of (say) $6.50. on a $50. purchase, the shipping company's fee of $25.-$35. on top of that comes an as unwelcome surprise and is often thought to be import duty rather than realising that its a 'handling fee' money grab by the shipping company.

The alternative is to use regular post where fees are minimal or non-existent. Many vendors in the US can't be bothered to go to the post office and lose our business as a result.

You may remember that I was fortunate enough to win the under hood insulation pad for my S-type. Gonzo shipped it to me by regular post, it arrived in record time with no moneys due.

Mike,

That sent me off on an interesting Google trail through the complexities of Canadian GST, PST and HST by the CBSA.

We have a similar situation with carriers inflating import duty with handling fees but at least we only have the single UKBA (UK Border Agency) carrying out selective checks so there is a little more standardisation.

I've been hit twice recently with £35 charges ($55) on parcels from the US whereas others have arrived with no additional duty/handling charge. The reason for the difference has been, as you described, lazy labelling and carrier choice by the US sender.

We're gonna build a fancy high speed railway between London and Birmingham and the on to Manchester/Liverpool and Leeds. It will be very beneficial and we will not need to use our Jaguars except for local drive - so the cost of fuel shouldn't bother us. Should it?

Oh no, not the HS2?
Shirley, you can't be serious!
Mind you; London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds.
No disrespect but none of them have featured highly on my bucket list.
As for fuel prices (ever noticed how closer the price of LPG is getting to petrol?) it is just another thing that we have no control over and have to suck up.
I am pretty sure that the Chancellor knows exactly how much duty he/she is going to apply to fuel many, many years in advance.
The public protests and blockades of petrol stations and refineries have been factored in for a long time and actually help the sitting government maintain a benign profile.
'We are going to raise the duty on fuel by 4%!'
'We protest!'
'Bowing to public pressure we will only raise it by 1%'
'Huzzah!'
'And then only raise it by 3% in April'
'Ok, 3%, that's not too bad when you look at it in real terms. After all, we appear to be heading for a triple dip recession so I don't mind shelling out a bit more for the honour of driving through pot holed infested roads at 4.7 miles per hour (average speed in London) and also haviing to pay extra just to get into where you work (congestion charges and road pricing are spreading)'
What they seem to forget is that is a lot of people are looking forward to a triple dip
recession as it will make a nice change from a 10 year depression.
Just don't get me started on extraterrestials!
