Default Do lightweight wheels improve performance?

Hi folks,
I found this tech on a forged wheels site, not sure if this helps to improve the performance? Like handling or acceleration?

Many over on the F-Type forum have fitted lightweight forged wheels and they all rave how much better the car handles and performs,
check out what fellow Sydney-sider BruceTheQuail says about his. It's all about reducing the unsprung weight.

Over the years, on various cars, I've replaced steel wheels with alloys. The weight difference (which was significant...probably 50%) made a pronounced improvement in the feel of the car in every case. Once, in the 70s, I installed some alloy "Mag Wheels" on Mom's Buick GS400. She was hardly a car or driving enthusiast but even she remarked that the car felt "...so much lighter on its feet".

I wonder if a person might run into a point of limited returns on reducing wheel weight, though?

Cheers
DD

Yes, every car I've owned that didn't have forged wheels gets them! The difference in cutting weight on wheels is night and day! An often overlooked bit is also tire weight. Absolute nightmare to find accurate tire weights but swapping to a set that were a few pounds lighter on my track Boxster was a noticable improvement! Percentage wise it was way more than our Jags (stripped out with some lightened parts it was in the 2600 lbs range).

I know this is an "old thread" but today's Edmonton Journal has an article on the new Cayman GT4 with the following quote:

"I’d strongly recommend anyone shopping the new RS to opt for the $17,840 magnesium wheel set. Oh, I know you’ll get more visual bang for your buck with the carbon-fibre trim bits in the $15,110 Weissach package..."

I'm guessing that $15-18K wheel set pricing starts to approach that point of limited returns...
