Default Starter Motor Help Please

Hi all,

On a few occasions recently when I turn the key to start my baby Jag you hear a high whining noise coming from the engine bay, but the engine itself is not being turned over I am assuming the noise is the electric motor turning?? - it is very very intermittent and only happens when you need it to not happen and so far second or third turn of the key it does what it should...

Is it a case or replacing the solenoid or the starter motor & solenoid? And how easy is it to do?

Many, many thanks for any help

Steve, odds are you are going to need to replace the whole starter. I am sure with a bunch of looking you can get a new solenoid, but for the money, probably easiest just to replace the whole starter.

Replacing the starter is pretty straight forward on this car as it is on the top of the engine. The big thing you have to be careful of is the connector on the throttle body. Just take your time pulling it off so you don't destroy the connector. The rest is pretty straight forward. Remove a few wires, undo a few bolts and off it comes. For starters, this car is about as easy as it gets.

All modern starters have an over-run clutch. That allows the engine to
spin faster then the starter when the engine first catches. That clutch
can fail to engage. When that happens the starter motor will turn freely
without turning the engine. That is likely what you are hearing.

This clutch cannot be repaired. Sometimes you can replace the clutch
which also includes the starter gear. This is sometimes called the Bendix.
Generally it is easier to just replace the starter motor.

Pete.

Many thanks Jim,

Not a good car year so far this year between speakers, dog sick, and starter motors :-)

I will have a look at both thread and manual today and see what's involved.. hopefully I can do this job, and not break anything else in the process lol.. bearing in mind I have chickened out of changing the back plugs twice now where I have been worried something else will break on me..

Meanwhile I have tracked down this: JAGUAR XTYPE 2.0 2.5 V6 3.0 BRAND NEW STARTER MOTOR 2001- C2S1396 X-TYPE X TYPE | eBay

Is it worth the price difference between this and a second user one the Dr can get hold of for me?

Many many thanks everyone for your input

Steve, for that price, I think you are going to be hard pressed to beat that deal, especially for a new starter.

The new one would be my thought, too...they're heavy enough that it would probably cost 20 quid to get it there!
