Default Starter replacement on 3.0

Hello guys;

Just as I am getting my suspension noises and looseness all taken care of, the car gives me yet another unpleasant surprise.

A few weeks ago I had a horrible noise that sounded like a sticking starter, but it would stop every time I turned the car of. It was really loud and seemed to be coming from the starter solenoid:

The noise went away all by itself and I really did not investigate any further.

Tonight when I went to start the car it made that failed starter noise where al you hear is a whiz/grinding type noise, but it started on the second attempt with no problem.

At this point I am sure that the noise on the video is some kind of sticking starter solenoid failure, and I would like to replace my starter as soon as I can.

I have tried searching the archives, but have found no clear instructions on how to replace the stater on a 3.0 automatic car. Some posts say its a 1/2 hour job, just remove the battery and tray and pull it out. I have looked in there and it seems more complicated than that.

Any help on replacing the starter on the 3.0 automatic is greatly appreciated

Thanks!!

Anyone got any idea how to replace the starter on a 3.0 Auto??

Any recommendations on starter brand? O Reilly's carries one with a lifetime warranty for 115...

I had to remove the starter on mine when I pulled the transmission. If memory serves correctly, it only took about 20 minutes. The transmission replacement tsb had pretty good instructions but it's basically disconnect battery, remove the top transmission mount and bar that goes between the top of the engine and the transmission mount. Disconnect the two sets of wires on the back of the starter, and remove the two starter bolts and it lifts right off.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your response Itmax

I think that the procedure is different for the 3.0 model, can find anything definitive though

The 3.0 model is the exact same engine on the outside with a little bit bigger bore/stroke internally. All the steps are the same and all the brackets, mounts, covers, fittings, and exterior dimensions are identical so you shouldn't have any extra trouble.

Good luck!

before you go ripping into the engine,
get a long screwdriver and place the tip on the starter case, and place your finger on the top to feel for vibration make sure it is the starter that is making the noise.

That helps a lot. I have been looking for the TSB with no luck under the TSB section, I'll give it a go again a little later

Thanks !!

Found this topic :

Step by step instructions on replacing the starter......all very doable except for the part where I need a "power train support jack" to hold things in place. Obviously it's a safety precaution because the transmission bar mount is being unscrewed, but is it necessary???

Has anyone done this job without the bottom support???

Anyone replaced the starter without the transmission support?

I fear I am going to remove that bracket and have something fall down!

You can just support it with a floor jack under the transmission while you take off the top mount. Very simple and nothing to worry about.

Thanks so much. That's what I will do.

At least once I week I start the car and it makes that awful noise in my video, I turn of and restart and then the noise goes away.

Went ahead and changed the starter, bought it from O'Reillys with a lifetime warranty. Took 1.5 hours mainly because of bolts I could not get loose. Used my jack on the transmission.

Pretty simple over all. Could probably do it again in a few minutes.
