Default 02' engine cuts out, but fine when restarted

Hi. My first post here. Very intermittently I run into problems with the 02 x type. I can be driving along and suddenly the car will not accelerate and the power steering goes out. Once I get the car parked, shut off, and restarted, the car seems to reset and works fine. Any ideas what the problem could be? The check engine light is currently on, but last I had checked it was an 02 sensor code (which I have not had fixed yet). Thanks!

I read through some threads and it seems that a similar symptom involves a fuel pump going bad. I have done a little research on parts and see that they go from $100 for a pump up to close to $1000 for a whole assembly.

Thoughts on the problem possibly being a fuel pump and also on prices? I plan on taking it in to my mechanic, but just want to have an idea of what I'm getting in to as far as parts and labor costs.

If your car has a fuel filter that has not been changed recently, you might want to try changing it to see if it cures the problem.

kevpain, from what you are describing, you have either a bad fuel pump or a loose connector somewhere. But, like was mentioned, try changing out the fuel filter to see if that helps any. Otherwise, your best solution is going to be connecting up a fuel pressure gauge, running it up near the windshield so you can take a look at it as the car is acting up. Just for reference, the fuel pressure regulator is designed to maintain the fuel rail at about 55 psi above the intake pressure. So, during normal driving, you should see the fuel pressure gauge reading between 40-50 psi. If at idle your fuel pressure is down around 40 psi, then that is a sign that your fuel pump is starting to go.

If you need more info, let us know.

Update on the issue. The problem has recently become more frequent. It happened this morning upon start up, but restarted the second time fine. I drove for 3 miles or so and it stalled after making a left turn through a red light. It stalled the other day while slowing down for a traffic light and again when making a right turn.

I had it in for a look at my mechanic (not jag) and they could not replicate the issue. They DID NOT connect a pressure gauge to the fuel rail. Their reasoning was that it could be a number of issues including electrical. They said that if it's electrical then the fuel pump wouldn't work to create pressure. They also believe that the fuel pump won't normally just quit intermittently.

I read through several other threads regarding stalling issues and noticed some issues with the engine bay fuse box. Any thoughts?

Also, I have codes P1646 and P1647 pertaining to o2 sensors.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm considering taking it to the dealer for diagnosis only, but hesitate to do anything through them because of their astoundingly high rates.

Thermo, you mentioned it could be a loose connection somewhere. What connections should I check?

Another interesting twist to the saga. I decided to check out the inertia switch and when I pressed it, it clicked. Why would this be? If the switch was tripped shouldn't the car not work at all?

Going down hill like that may well mean very little fuel & air flow so an air leak might cause that by providing too much air for the fuel.
