'03 x-type 2.5 won't start
Hi Everyone, I have a 2003 Jaguar X-Type 2.5. About a year ago it started running poorly, couldn't go over 40 mph... I ran the codes and it had 2 bad fuel injectors. Car has been parked since then and I would like to try fixing it myself. However, now I can't even get it to turn over. Replaced the battery but when I turn the key only the dash and radio light up. No cranking... not even the standard ticking noise you get with a dead battery. Only thing you can here is a humming from the back of the car which I assume is the fuel pump? Checked all of the fuses and they are all in good condition. Any ideas?
Hi X Type87,
Welcome to the forum!
Before I go off track, was any attempt made to fix the injectors and is the battery definately good?
Do you get the flutter of the solenoid, I like the hum from the rear, you do have life!!
But I don't have much experience with injectors, I am sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon?
Regards, Stu

Hi Stu, no attempt has yet been made to fix the injectors. The car would start and drive before, but has been sitting awhile and now i can't get it to turn over to move it to a place where I can work on it. Yesterday I even tried jumping it with another car to see if it was the battery but still no luck. Even with jumping it the only sound was the quiet hum from the rear again but no engine crank or battery click. I wouldn't be so worried if the engine atleast made some kind of noise when I turned the key... but all Im getting is silence which gives me no indication of what could be the issue.
How did you get on?
I wish you well and please feel free to pm me (as I'll definately get your reply!!) when your snow is clear?
Stu

Hey Stu, tapping the starter didnt seem to work. I think i might try pulling the starter and cleaning it out by hand really good.

Hmm, sorry for that earlier advice,
Is the solenoid fluttering and have you heard the ugh ugh ugh of the starter trying to engage at all?
One tthing I am thinking is did you set or cut off anything before the car was left sitting?
Is the car immobilised, does the vehicle security light flash continually from the console?
The solenoid may be dirty or corroded.
When you turn the ignition to 1, do you get the humming, a whirr-flutter and the guages lighting up ?
And are the cabin lights dim?
You will get there, hang tight.. Stu

Cabin light comes on and doesnt appear to be any dimmer than usual. The dash lights up when the key is turned and the small red light next to the shifter flashes a few times. Only sound i hear when turning the key is a slight hum from under the rear seat which kind of sounds like its fluttering and fades away the longer you have the key turned. How do you check the selonoid? Im not sure i know where thats located... I cant wait for it to be spring here so I can just start tearing into this car and get it running again. Im hoping worst case scenario is I have to get a new starter and selonoid and then I can get started on replacing the injectors.
This won't help you until you get the engine to spin, but I can tell you from experience that even if the engine is turning over it will not start on year old gasoline. Been there, tried that. You will need to get all the old gas out of the tank that you can, and replace it with fresh premium fuel.
