Default 05 a/c blowing hot while sitting

My 05 is blowing hot while sitting. When I get up to speed it will cool. I did notice that the fans were not switching up to the high speed and were cycling on/off.
I recovered and recharged system was a little low but not terrible. Compressor is running constantly so I believe it’s ok. Replaced it a few years ago but no problems until today. All fuses seem ok. Can’t tell which is hi/low relay. There is a box on the shroud with heat sink fins. Is this what controls fan speed? Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

10 Limited: Two possibilities, but you already checked one:

1) Low Freon causes the A/C to blow cold air at highway speeds and in the morning and evening when the outside temperature is cooler, but the A/C blows warm air while idling at stop lights and during midday when outdoor temperatures are hottest. You already checked and recharged the Freon level, so.......

2) A bad fan control module - common in our aging X-Types - won't energize the radiator fans to full speed. So the A/C blows warm air at stop lights because the weak fans don't pull enough outside air thru the A/C condenser coil, in front of the radiator. But the A/C blows cold air at highway speeds where outside air is rapidly pushed thru the condenser coil, without the need for radiator fans.

To learn how to diagnose a bad fan control module, do an advanced search of this forum for "fan control module" by member "Thermo". There are many posts on replacing (some on repairing) a bad fan control module because this is a common problem.

10 Limited, I see you are near me (I am down in California). If you want to come on down, we can look at this. But, from the sounds of things, your fan controller is starting to go and it is not providing sufficient air flow for the A/C.

The quick check you can do, start up the car and put the A/C dash fan on the highest speed it will go and dial the temp to as low as it will go. This will force the fans to run at their maximum speed. Now, in this state, open the hood and lean over the radiator/engine bay some. Are you getting a nice blast of air in your face or are you getting a nice gentle breeze? If you are getting the gentle breeze, your controller is going. You should get quite a bit of air in your face in this state, regardless of the engine temp.

I wish I was on the West coast! I’m in southern Maryland about 30 minutes out of DC! When the fans come on they do not blow fast or hard. They will also cycle like the system was on low. Is the controller on the fan shroud towards drivers side?

10 Limited: This video is not for a Jag, but I found it useful to understand the dual logic of the ECM and Fan Control Module for variable speed based in engine temperature, and high speed based on A/C needs.

10 Limited, like was mentioned, I live south of you by about 45 miles. I am straight down MD-4 from you. I work up in Lusby at the nuclear plant.

As for the fan controller, open the hood of your car and rest your hands on the support going over the radiator. Where your right hand will most likely come to rest, if you look over the edge into the engine bay, you will see the silver finned box (about 4x6" in size) sitting there. It is tucked between the fan shroud and the driver's side headlight.

If you do get a new fan controller, please note that there are 2 styles of fan controllers out there. Your car has the newer style fan controller. There are some that are for the older cars (up to 04 MY as I recall) that have a slightly different plug assembly on the inlet plug. So, when buying, make sure that you get one specific for the 05 or later.

Ok I see now you’re in California MD! My controller looks like it’s got permanent wiring coming from it. Is that why they sell the pigtails with the new ones? I found some on eBay from $30-$60. The others are over $300. Just for the pigtails? SMDH!

10 Limited, there is a cable with 2 plugs on one side of the controller and then 2 smaller plugs that are between the controller and each fan. Both versions of the controller have this setup as I recall. Each of the cables to/from the fan controller are about 12 inches long. So, follow the cables back and you will find the plug between the car and the controller. If there is no plug there, then someone has modified your car and this will make for more work. Granted, I can overcome that with what I have at my house.

10Limited, unfortunately, it would appear that I was mistaken and your car was built with the older style fan controller. So, what this means is if you buy the new style controller (what you picture in your second image), then you will have to also purchase the adapter harness to convert between what you have and this new module. Finding a used module may be difficult these days as a lot of them probably have failed and are not being sold. What you will need is something like this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-OEM...sAAOSwNOJbLnOP

This is a good price on the plug and that converts like you need. If my memory serves me correct (hopefully another member can confirm), the plugs to the fan simply need to be rerouted a little bit to make them plug into the fan controller with no extensions needed.
