Default 2.5 petrol engine stuttering / misfire

I have a problem with my X-Type 2.5 and hope to get some hints from you.

When accelerating I can feel a strong stuttering effect coming from the engine. The problem emerges especially from 1200 until 3000 rpm no matter if half or full throttle.
I verified the spark plugs, which seemed to be OK.
I am not sure what could be the cause of this issue:
- ignition coils?
- spark plug wires?

Maybe the problem could also be a defective sensor.
Do some of you have an idea?

Both spark plug wires and coils would be my first guess assuming each cylinder is getting a proper amount of fuel mixed with air.

I don't have a scanner, but would it help isolate which cylinders are involved?

Jay, if you can, get out into the country and find an isolated road and accelerate with the car as hard as you can. This should help throw a code into the computer. From there you can get the code read and that will tell you the cylinder that is acting up. Other than that, if you can look at the top of all the plugs, take a look at the coils mounted to each spark plug. You will notice a clear top to the coils. If one is cracked, it is either failed or will fail shortly. Also, after it rains, if one (or more) of the coils is cracked, it will be more noticeable since the water will short out the coil. With our engines, you are more likely to notice a problem with the coils on the side of the engine nearest the firewall. These will also be the hardest to spot if there is a problem with the coils due to the intake laying over the coils.

Beyond the coils, it can be so many things. That is where making the car throw a code will help narrow things down a lot.

First of all thank you for your replies.

I should say that the engine runs on LPG, too.
Running on petrol or on LPG, the problems are always the same.

@Thermo:
I already did lots of test runs with the car.
High speeds, hard accelerating (from very low to very high rpm)
But unfortunately I never got an error code.

I will check the coils and let you know.
