Default 2002 X-Type DSC Error

Hi All;

I has been a while - Thankfully !!

I have seen some threads on DSC Error but just needed a refresh.

2002 X-Type.

Battery only 2 years old.
I did do the rear brakes 6 months ago.

I have a DSC Error. Tried to reset but not.
Speedometer not working - I assume it is all connected.

Interesting thing is that the doors don't lock when put in drive.

We have a battery issue, my brake job or something else.

Thank you Ladies and Gents.

Frank, I would get the codes read for your car. I bet you will find that you have 2 wheel speed sensors that are not sending the correct signal to the ABS unit which is then causing the computer to shut down the speedo and causing the DSC system to not engage since it is not sure if the wheels are slipping or it has lost speed sensing of the 2 wheels. From there, the fix will be pretty obvious. Any questions, post back here and we will get you going in the right direction.

Default Codes

Hi Chris,

Thank you.
I have a reader so I pulled the codes.

C1145,1165,1175

I googled them and it seems you are correct on the sensors.

Is this something I can fix or replace.
Money is tight and I am fairly handy if I can get a rough idea on what to do.

Again thank you for your help and in advance.

Best

Frank

Frank, I would say to first start with looking at the rear wheels. You can remove the rear wheel and then remove the speed sensor. From there, you can use a flashlight and look down the hole. You should see what appears to be a metallic gear/band with holes in it. If you don't see that, then you need new reluctance rings (this will require removing the rear CV shaft, removing the old ring and then sliding the new ring in place). This will atleast get you back to the point that the speedo will work (ie, fix C1165 and C1175). As for the front, odds are, you are looking at a bad front hub assembly. It is pretty straight forward to replace (remove wheel, remove caliper/rotor, undo center nut on the CV shaft, undo 3 bolts to remove hub assembly). I would also look at the wiring for the sensors as you may have some damaged wiring. Unlikely, but it is possible.

As for cost, the rings are going to be coming out of England and you can plan on spending about $30 a ring (most of which is the shipping cost) unless you plan on buying new CV axles, then you can get them in the US for around $100 or so each. As for the front hub assembly, I was just checking this out and you can get them for around $35 each.

My ABS issue was one of the cables connecting the front sensor to the car. The cables are separate from the sensor, not integral with it and are very easy to change after the arch liner is removed.
