Default 2003 X-Type 3.0L Fuel Pump Failure

I have checked fuses, relays, and inertia switch. I have checked all connections leading to the fuel pump. I have 12V power thru the fuel pump control module and out of the connector plug to the pump, located under the back seat. I cannot hear pump energize when key is turned on.

I am convinced the fuel pump is bad, unless someone has another idea. I would like to know if I need to change both left and right side units, or just the main pump? Just want to be sure before removing gas tank!

Can anyone recommend a place to purchase? They are all over E-bay with many different price ranges.

Thanks, Robochop

An important point regarding modern fuel pumps: they are cooled by the fuel surrounding; my dealer has told me that many pump failures are caused by chronically running the car with a low fuel level in the tank,,,I know this was the case with pump failure in my old Ford Taurus...

Robo, you can try connecting up a fuel pressure gauge to the schrader valve in the engine bay. With the engine not running, but the key in the RUN position, you should be up near 50 psi pressure (over 40 is ok, but normally up near 50). That will confirm if the pump is 1) getting power and/or 2) the pump is failed.

As for replacing 1 or 2 pumps, if you are in there, the safe bet would be to replace both. But, most people only replace the one as the other pump sees very little use and for the most part, doesn't need to run except to get the last little bit of fuel over to the side with the main pump.

If you don't want to purchase things on e-bay, there is a good import shop I used near the end of Military Highway and Little Creek (1 block to the east of that intersection). They had some pretty decent prices and if you want some place that you can talk with them, I am sure they can help you out.

You can't change two pumps if you only have one. It's one pump, two pick ups setup.

This may help explain how the fuel system is arranged in the tank.

Chris, Thanks for your quick and informative reply! I can't get any fuel pressure to check, as the pump will not energize at all. You seem familiar with my area. Are you referring to the Bap-Geon auto parts store? I work at Little Creek, so I will check it out tomorrow. It's just a lot of work getting the tank out....
Thanks again!

RObochop, yes, that is the store. Their price are fairly good (cheaper than the dealership, but with some looking, you can find it cheaper online).
