2004 X-type 3.0 - considering buying
Newbie here:
I'm looking at an 04 X-type Automatic and I have the car fax. It is low miles (84K) and as recent at 2013, it was sold as a Jaguar Select Certified Used car w/ 63K miles. Service history looks on-time throughout ownership since new with 4 owners. Asking price is $5400.
Sounds good so far. BUT... at 11K miles, the ECM was replaced along with drivers door lock; oddly it shows headlight bulbs replaced at 16K, 23K, and 40K miles. At 41K the "idle control valve/motor" was replaced, and at 75K it failed emissions, but passed 3 days later with no record of what was repaired, so that could have been something simple. Lastly, the hood latch broke a few days ago at auction which needs immediate repair and prevents me from inspecting under the hood (today).
While nobody has a crystal ball -- What is everyone thoughts here: is this a lemon and run away or well cared for and typical 'nuances' of jag ownership and worth pursing? I do all my own maintenance/repairs & have a full shop (but not a professional). I just don't know Jags that well.
Thanks!

Lemon? Hardly. You have to remember this is a 12 year old car and over that course of times things will come up. Sounds like any issues that came up were addressed quickly and didn't return. If you have a full up to date maintenance history I would think you are good to go if everything works and it drives well. The emissions fail could be just about anything, but more than likely a vacuum leak, which was easy and cheap to fix. As for the hood latch, more or a pain than anything. Do a search on here on how to address that. I would say to take some time and do some surfing on here to familiarize yourself on some of the more common issues of the X. If well maintained they can be very reliable cars. And if anything does go wrong there are a lot of very helpful friendly people on here willing to help. Plus, pretty much anything than can go wrong has been discussed on here. If the car checks out I wouldn't be afraid.
Let us know how it goes.

I test drove and did not buy. Given this was my first test drive of an X-type, maybe some of this is common. Issues were:
1) when slowing to a stop, it almost felt like the anti-lock brakes would kick in. of 20 stops, it did it about 5-7 times. This sounds like a speed sensor.
2) when cruising/light acceleration from 35 to 50, it seemed like it couldn't decided on a gear, shifting up/down/up/down. maybe related, don't know.
3) VERY disappointed in cabin noise. My 200K mile 2001 sequoia and my 2012 Nissan Altima are both quieter. I expected something more on par with an older Lexus ES.
Overall, this car was a pass!
