Default 2004 Xtype 2.5 ticking noise??

My engine sounds rough. It has a ticking sound while it is idling and driving. When you shift gears it rattles over 2000 rpms. Does anyone know what this could be or what I could do? I do not have the money to get a engine right now as I just paid cash for this car a few weeks ago.
Thanks,
Brady

What is the mileage on the car? Do you have any information on its service history?

Hi Brady;

Hopefully it's nothing serious. Have you taken a look at the tensioners and pulleys? Do you have an auto stethoscope?

A pulley or tensioner may tick and get worse at higher RPM...

I have heard of loose flywheel bolts on these cars. Maybe a YouTube video can help

Someone else in Ohio. Great! If you ever get to Richmond Heights, I have a terrific Jaguar Mechanic. I drive 70 miles one way just to have him work on my car. Good luck!

I do not have a auto stethoscope. I have basic mechanical skills but not in depth. I've heard a lot about ticking and knocking being due to rods, lifters, etc which all equal new engine. I have watched youtube videos but I can't tell if it is knocking or ticking. Thank you very much for the replies this site has been very helpful with me owning my first Jag.

Brady,
The good news is that your engine is a DOHC and does not have the push rods or rocker arms that would often make the ticking sound. Are you using premium fuel? If not, you could try a few tankfuls of that and see if it improves. Also, if you have not changed the oil you could do that to make sure it is the correct viscosity. And also at 133K if the spark plugs are original that could be something to look at.
