Default 2005 X-Type 3.0 AWD

I have been offered an '05 X Type AWD in nice condition, with low miles, and at what seems to be a right price, but I have a concern.

During the test drive, over uneven surfaces there was a loud clank or bang coming from under the car, directly under the driver's seat.

I crawled under the car as best I could, but I didn't see anything that looked obviously loose or out of place.

If this is common, and from a catalytic converter, muffler, or exhaust pipe, it would be easy to address, but if it is a problem with the AWD, I will run away.

If anyone has experience of this issue, I'd appreciate hearing from you . . .

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum eelpie,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

eelpie, from what you are describing, this sounding like a bad carrier bearing. Not an expensive fix, but not cheap either. You can plan on spending $500 or so to get that taken care of (assuming that is the problem). More than likely, you are looking at a bad arm on the rear suspension. Fairly easy fix, but again, you are in the $500 range at a minimum (assuming you find the 4 new arms on e-bay and then find a local shop that will install them for around $200).

There are many other X-Types out there. If you are having questions about the car, move on to another one. You can find what you are after without having to worry about a problem right off the bat. Granted, someone like me would be picking the car up in a heartbeat if the price was right because no one is going to want to deal with a problem vehicle right off the bat. But then, I know the X-TYpe fairly well and can replace just about anything on the car I desire.
