Your photo shows the variable valve solenoid for that bank. It could come from there although it doesn't look like a 3 quarts leak in the picture! Are you sure the sump was full when you started? To fit a new seal, the whole cambox cover has to be removed
The way to find out the source for sure is to spend a bit of time cleaning things up and then, with a full sump of oil, start again, but this time watching carefully! First, is there any leakage from anywhere at idle; if not do a quick run with not too many revs on the clock and check again. If nothing, maybe a longer run with higher revs and check again and so on until the source reveals itself.
Has any work been done to the front of the engine?
For the engine to lose that amount of oil, there would need to be a failure of the front crankshaft seal or one of the gaskets to the timing cover. The VVT solenoid grommet in the photo is not going to cause a leak of that magnitude unless it was completely missing.
Follow the instructions outlined by Astromorg and report back. Use a mirror with a torch (flashlight) once everything is cleaned up to see the lower part of the front timing cover.
Ok I the solenoid in the photo got replaced because the seal was completely missing. Cleaned the complete engine and since have had no oil leaking or going down it is staying full. But the check engine light came back on so not sure if problem is fixed
It might be related in that a sensor was damaged by the oil. But, most likely it isn't. Take the vehicle to a place like autozone or any auto store that reads the codes for free. Get the code read out and post the numbers and we can help with diagnosis.
