New to the forum, new to the Jaguar. I bought a 2002 Jaguar X-Type 5-speed Manual recently and the only issue with it is that the shifter is loose horizontally. I opened the console and pulled the leather shift boot up and I can see a pin that is wiggling around and seems to be missing a bushing. I looked up a shifter assembly to compare it with mine and I think I am right. I tried the search tool and it doesn't really show me any information.

Is there a bushing that goes into this? Or do I buy a whole new shifter? In the attached picture it shows the black bushing but mine is completely gone. Is there a part number to this? I can't find any listing online and my dealer is 4 hours away, I called them and they apparently don't have a clue what I am talking about.

Is the bushing in question marked by the blue box outline? I can contribute nothing to your knowledge here since my manual shift does not seem to have the looseness that you describe and I have never heard this complaint before.
It is hard to understand how a bushing could go missing entirely - even if it broke into pieces there would be some evidence of it below, no?
I doubt that you'll find the piece as a separate listing but could you not adapt a bushing to fit?

 

Yeah I put an outline around it. Being that it is black, I assume it is a polyurethane or rubber bushing. I am not sure if maybe my design was welded as there is not particles or pieces around. I am going to try to snap more photos. Being that this car is 15 years old I am sure this problem may occur with other Jag owners. Maybe this information can be of value.

I went down to a European car specialist to see if he had any ideas and he didn't. I might bite the bullet and buy another shifter entirely if I cannot find a solution.

 

Ok I found the culprit. Yes there was a piece left but it was pinched between the foam that insulates the console.




The bushing is pushed into the "bowl" and locks in while holding the alignment pin in place. So i guess it is off to the parts store I go to find a solution.

 

So i fixed it, it is no longer loose to the point where you miss gears but it is tight enough that it is considered functional.

I bought Vacuum caps from the auto part store (Advance Auto) Part #: 47395. It is a 3 piece set for $3 USD. I removed the shifter cables from the shifter. I then removed the shifter stay that has 4 phillips head screws and lifted gently to pull the shifter and pin out together.

After you are done you should be left with this. A bushing and a better feeling shifter to allow you to have time to order the correct part from Jaguar if they know what you are talking about.

Any part numbers added to this thread would be of great value to others in the future.

 

What is all that yucky dirt down there? The destroyed bushing and the dirt suggest that this car has led a hard life. Time to give it some tlc with its new owner.

 

This car is filthy, the previous owner was a man who liked black n mild and coffee, but shared with his car as well. At the end of my list is a full body detail. But hey, for $700, I can't complain. Without the bushing I couldn't drive the car to see if it was worth the attention. No tag or registration yet until I get it roadworthy. He even had the car sitting outside with no cover in the Miami heat.

 

Gophat, were you ever able to track down a replacement part? I have this exact issue on my '03 X-Type. Bushing has completely disintegrated. I have scoured the internet (including Ford Mondeo parts/eBay.co.uk) without luck. I would love to correct my sloppy shifter.

No, the vacuum cap has held up and basically that pin was coated from the factory. So there is no actual bushing part number. You would need to buy the assembly entirely. Maybe get a machine shop to make you a soft metallic style bushing.

 

Ok! Thanks for the tip/quick reply. I'll go order an assortment of vacuum caps, see what size fits :P
