Default Absurd Cost to Fix Air Conditioning

Hi All.

I've had a 2004 X-Type 3.0 for awhile now and love it! The air conditioning wasn't working so I brought it to Midas - they tried replacing the freon but it turns out the freon wasn't "catching," which means something is wrong with the A/C system. Fine, that makes sense.

Then they said that it would cost somewhere between $2,500 to $6,000 to fix the A/C!!! They mentioned that the A/C system is behind the engine and you essentially have to take apart the engine to fix the A/C.

Have any of you had repairs with the A/C system or a similar experience? Any thoughts or advice?

Which is their way of saying "We're not sure what's wrong, we don't want to find out, please go away" :-)

Any thoughts or advice?

Get a second opinion from a Jag specialist.

Cheers

"the freon wasn't "catching," ... never heard that phrase in 30 years.

You should be at a air conditioning specialty shop. They have the parts, the tools, and the knowledge.

Midas is for crappy stock exhaust systems.

Thanks, those are good points. Do you know of any air conditioning specialty shops? My google searches for air conditioning shops in the Washington DC area aren't coming up with much. Where would be the best place I should take it?

Schlim,
If you don't want to go to the dealer I can recommend an indy shop in Hyattsville. I've taken my car there for a few repairs and have received excellent service. I also think they have very fair rates for our type of cars. They only work on luxury cars, BMWs, Mercedes, etc. You should call and see what they can do to help.

5 Star Auto on 52nd St in Hyattsville, MD.

In this case I would go to a dealer or other specialist for troubleshooting and diagnosis only, then make your decision. You can't decide how to solve a problem until you know exactly what it is. Good luck.

I see you're in DC. You can always go to Top Line Jaguar in Springfield. They work solely on Jags. Good guys, just make sure you negotiate with them, never accept first quote. Secondly, they allow you to BYOP, so once you know what's wrong, you can save $$$ getting them from JPLV online and then have Top Line install them. That's basically my plan for anything beyond what I can do on my own.

Never, never go to Midas or the like. I wouldn't trust those guys rotating my tires. They'd find a way to screw that up.

I'm looking for a good online parts source. What's JPLV?

Thanks for the tips everybody!

I ended up going to the dealer to get it diagnosed, they said it would cost something like $100 to diagnose it. They figured it out and it ended up being a lot cheaper than the absurd amount Midas quoted.

I really don't think Midas was actually quoting you an absurd amount. What they were quoting you was "take a hike, buddy".
