Default AC Clutch "thing"

Hi Guys,

The air conditioning clutch is not engaging on my 2003 X-Type 2.5L.

The fuse is good, the relay is good, the ground (-) at the compressor is good, and the hot (+) at the compressor is switching on and off with the switch on the dash.

Looking at the compressor, the (-) wire is going to the clutch. The (+) wire is going to the back of the compressor to something (sensor or hi temp safety think??) before going to the clutch. I would think this thing has opened the circuit.

Does anyone know what this thing is and does, and is it replaceable?

Yes, I did a search with no luck. (Lots of AC posts!!!)

Larry, I think you are referring to the over pressure switch. It is possible that this is failed. I would try disconnecting the plug off of that sensor and using a multimeter, measure resistance between the 2 pins. SHould be less than 5 ohms. If it is over that, then you have a bad switch.

Hello Thermo my friend,

I thought I read that the over pressure switch was on a line. Acting like a solenoid pushing a schrader valve under it.

This is looking to me more like a high temp cutout like you find on an AC motor. It is wired in series on the (+) wire. It is mounted on the case.

Larry, I would need to do some looking. If that is a switch that you can push on, then I would be looking at that as more of an overpressure switch (underpressure switch? For when you lost your freon and you don't burn up your compressor due to no lubrication?). Otherwise, it may be an over temp switch that if the compressor gets too hot, it will shut down the compressor.

Thermo,

This weekend I will remove it from the compressor and see what is under it and maybe it has a name or number on it. I will also bypass it to see if the clutch engages.

If it does not rain...again!!

Hi Larry,

The schematics do show a device in series with the AC clutch, integrated within the compressor assembly "block".
The electrical symbol is that of a thermal cutout switch, not a pressure cutout switch.
Makes sense that is could reset itself when cooled down (bi-metal or wax type thermal cutout).
As it is part of the overall compressor assembly there is no direct part number reference for it, but you might find some relevant sub manufacturer markings on the device that we can research to ascertain what its trip temperature is and its operation mode.

Thanks H2O now I know what a thermal switch symbol is.

I pulled it out and jumped the wires. AC works fine. I will use the AC sparingly until I get one back on. I will see if I can find this compressor on other cars and many be a rebuilder or driver will help with finding one. If you say Jaguar to people no body know anything about them...

If someone can check what temp their AC compressor runes at this will help. I will monitor my temps next week.

This is the sensor with no markings on it.

I can't find anything on what the parameters are for that thermal cutout.

Perhaps a forum member still has a dead AC compressor they have replaced for leaking that may still have a good cutout they could kindly harvest for you.
