Additional Power Outlet?
Hi Everyone,
Forgive me if thishas already been answered, but I have searched and have not been able to find the answer. I want to add an additional power outlet for my Sirius. My intention was to justtap into the existing orange wires going to the cig lighter. This way I couldneatly tuck my Sirius power supply under the center consloe and still have use of my existing outlet for radar detetor, cell phonecharger, nav, etc...
My question is, if I do this, will it create too much draw on that circuit and cause fuses to blow when I'm using 2accessories at once? Or should I look at another ignition circuit? Has anyone out there successfully accomplished this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No..your Sirius radio converter will not draw enough current along with the radar detector to blow a fuse..the CIG lighter will pull even more current than those two appliances will...That would be my choice to tap into if it's easier..
Thanks for the help. That was my initial thought, but I didn't want to create any problems for myself. It's actually really easy to get to that harness with the shifterbezel off and the ashtray out.
Thanks Dennis. We really love it too. The burgandywas actually my first choice, but I couldn't beat the price on the white one, so I settled. Although now that I haveit, I really like the white ext/tan int combination.

there is pre-wiring in two places in the car for both constant and ignition switched power. one connection point is in the trunk near the CD changer, the other is behind the access panel at the rear of the glove box. the dealer should know about this but may play dumb.
the constant power in both places works already, but to make the ignition switched power work you need to add a relay to the fuse box under the hood. It is a common ford relay and available from hundreds of ford smashed cars in the junkyards. you can get one for a few cents/dollars easily from them. All you need to do is plug in the relay to activate the wire.
the dealer has plugs available to use the connection, but any DIY guy could tap into it and power up your accessory. Certainly a good radio installation shop could understand what I mean if you present them this message.

Good points Bo..thanks...I didn't know this about the pre-wired areas

Same here....thanks for the info, Bo. Do you feel that using one of thosepoints would be a better choice than tapping into the wires onthe existing cig lighter?
Yeah I tapped into my cigarette lighter plug and mounted the plug on the passenger side below the glove box...stupid it didn't already have 2 of them...I had a radar, gps and ipod connected to it all the way to wisconsin and back and had no problems. I put a really low amp in-line fuse can't remember exactly...
That sounds like a good idea to put the inlinefuse in there. I'm going to wire mine up this weekend. I'll gladly post some pics if you think it would be of help to anyone.
Yeah the inline fuse is a must because anything can happen. Just make sure you check or test for + and - and than remove the fuse under the dash so you don't blow it and than put it back in when you are done...
