Default Advice Wanted

My Dad has a X-Type Jag, which developed a fault, initially the automatic gear box would't change gear. He took the car to a local garage who run a diagnosis and gave him a print out which has the following:

Fault 2 ABS
Fault 5 ECM
Fault 2 IP
Fault 3 ATC
Pass 0 FETM
Fault 1 GEM
Pass 0 PAM
Pass 0 ARM
Pass 0 CPM
Pass 0 VACM
Fault 2 ABS
C1165 Wheel speed rear right input - circut failure
U1900 CAN communications bus fault
Fault 5 ECM
P1643 CAN link engine control moduel/transmission control module circuit/network malfunction
C1165 Wheel speed rear right input - circut failure
P1260 Security Input
P1582 Flight Recorder data is stored
P1111 System Check Complete
Fault 2 IP
U1900 CAN communications bus fault
U2510 CAN - invalid data for vehicle security
Fault 3 ATC
B1263 Vent servo motor - circuit failure
B1239 Air flow blend door actuator - circuit failure
B1262 Defrost servo motor - circuit failure
Fault 1 GEM
B2177 Intrusion Sensor - circuit failure

The dash has 2 lights on it 1 looks like a pump the other not sure, the garage has replace the brain with a reconditioned 1 and we still have the same faults.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Regards

Chris

Some questions:

What lights are currently on in the dash?

I would guess, and its just a guess, that your tranny not shifting out of gear has something to do with the CAN faults. There is a connector that connects to the transmission at the bottom of your car. Unplugg it, clean it with some contact cleaner and plug it back and see what happens. If you have an ABS light is most likely the sensor, but the codes you gave seem to be from a very good scan tool so they could easily diagnose that.

Best of luck!!!

The lights that are lit on the dashboard or a yellow light looks like a pump and also a red light which looks like a cog with an I in it. Hope this helps.

With the number of codes and the fact that you can't read the indicators I would suggest taking it to a good Jag mechanic. If the car is as abused as it sounds I suggest it will cost you a lot to repair it. Good luck.

It certainly is looking like it's previous owner hadn't looked after it too well.

As in the last two months he has had to have all brakes and bearing replaced, now this.

He has only had the car five months.

Chris, from the looks of things, what has happened is the CAN bus wiring has been damaged and is causing a loss of information between the ECM and the instrument cluster and potentially to a few other modules. I would need to look at my manuals at home (currently at work), but from the sounds of things that is the case. I can possibly narrow it down to a more specific location once I see the manuals. I would ask what sort of work have you had done inside the dash recently. I would start in that area and then see what you can find in the way of damaged wiring harnesses.

Chris, looking at the list, i know you have atleast 2 issues. One is in the right rear wheel because someone installed the sensor such that the wiring got damaged or they damaged the speed ring and now the sensor is not seeing any wheel speed, leading to the one fault. The speed rings are known for failing and if you recently had the rear wheel bearings done, it could have been removed inadvertently then or when putting it back in. If you want some checks to make sure what is going on, let me know.

Now, for the bulk of your issues. From what I can tell, your climate control module is blocking a lot of signals from making it to other parts of the car. So, you essentially have the ECM and tranny computer talking to each other, but nothing else can talk with them. Unfortunately, this is one of those things that I would recommend taking it to a quality jag shop and let them see what you have. If it isn't the climate control module, then it is the data cable between the climate control and the tranny computer that has gotten damaged (anyone do some dash work in the car recently?)

If you need more help, let me know and I will see what I can do for you. Unfortunately, you are talking about looking at digital signals and unless you have very expensive equipment, you are not going to be able to read the information that is going back and forth.

The only work that has been carried out since my dad got the car is what I listed above, no work at all to the dash that he is aware of.

Thanks for the advise I will let him know and he can get it booked in somewhere different.

Regards

Chris
