Air Inlet Door Actuator - alternative alignment than TSB
I just removed the air inlet door actuator on my 2004 XType 3.0 sedan RH drive because of a fault where my fresh air vs re circulation selection on climate control had no effect. This came about while diagnosing heavy fogging during cold damp conditions, I also have a problem with my defrost door flap but that's another post for that issue. So here is the actuator removed from the car.
Mine is faulty and doesn't respond to power connected to it. I suspect the electric motor inside is done. I opened it to see what was inside and it's very simple to open. Just start with one of the plastic clasps and slow put pressure under it with small flat blade screw driver. Don't try to open the first latch completely or you may break it. Start with one and then move to the next and so forth until you loosen each enough around perimeter to separate the two halves. You can then see the gears inside. If you are performing the TSB fix for the fresh air door that calls for the drop of super glue then here is a possible short cut. The TSB says to perfectly time the rotation of the shaft on this actuator so that the flat edge of the "D" shaped shaft lines up with the two lines on the actuator case. You could simply open this actuator up and then by lifting the interlocking gears, position that shaft exactly as it should be then put everything back together by snapping actuator sides closed. Quick simple and you don't have to fiddle with pushing buttons on climate control and timing your disconnecting the wiring. I also wonder if doing it this way may avoid the error codes by unplugging the connection with ignition on. Hopefully these pictures help illustrate the actuator dissection and reassembly.
