Airbag Light 2004 X-Type
2004 X-Type 3.0L LHDrive 62K miles; airbag light on the instrument panel comes on 95% of the time. It comes on when starting, then goes out as it is supposed to, then starts flashing and eventually stays on. The code it flashes is 1 then 6, does this three times, then stays on. The code is (from this forum) "Pass seat weight sensor CAN fault" What does CAN mean? And could this be just an adjustment? I just drove about 25 miles back to my office and the light went off after start and did not flash or come back on. Unusual, happens infrequently.
This could be related to problem # 2, which is the airbag off light on the dash in front of the passenger comes on when an adult (usually 120 lbs on up) is sitting in that seat. The rest of the time the light it is off.
I'm taking it to the dealer Monday and would greatly appreciate any help or advice. I have had the car about 6 weeks, so don't have a history, but hate to be at the mercy of whatever the dealer wants to tell me.
Thanks in advance.

CAN bus (for controller area network) is a vehicle bus standard designed to allow microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other within a vehicle without a host computer.
CAN bus is a message-based protocol, designed specifically for automotive applications but now also used in other areas such as industrial automation and medical equipment.

I have more or less the same problem with my 2002. When my wife would sit in the passenger seat, the light on her side would come on, too. She found the light irritating and used the easy "fix" for it - a small piece of black electrical tape.
(More than a few people on this forum "fixed" the problem this way. Do some searching of the forum and you will see)
The most likely cause - I have been told - is a bad ground connection to the seat or a loose connector. I have yet to "ring" mine out because I fear it might be the second-most-likely cause; the airbag computer/controller needs to be re-flashed at a dealership.
Best advice given was to hand-over-hand the wiring, check connections, look for ground wiring and clean/re-attach it, and tighten the seat bolts to the body.
Let us know if you try that, and if it works!
The Jag dealer did all of the tests and determined the pass seat sensor to be faulty. Cost to replace; about $1500 plus, so I have not had it fixed yet. I rarely carry passengers, so not worried about anyone else, but will get to it when I have the money. I had the tech look back in the maintenance records, and this problem was reported by a previous owner several years ago, but never fixed. What year is your Jag?

Here's a lower priced one:
PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANCY SENSOR Jaguar X-Type 2006 06 | eBay
Thanks Bruce. I assume this will work in my 2004, and the seat has to be removed to install. One repair facility that specializes in Jags said they wouldn't do sensor or airbag work. Do you think my local Hispanic repair shop that I frequently use could do the job, or is a more experienced shop necessary?
For near $1,4000 in savings, I'd give it a try!
(Maybe your shop that repairs Hispanics can replace the sensor, too!)
