Default all wheel drive not working?

I have an 05 jag x type 2.5l manual trans. Our driveway sucks and trying to drive through muddy driveway car just fish tails like crazy and gets stuck very easily. We also have an 03 jag x type same engine and trans and it does not have an issue in mud or snow. I t seems like all the wheels are moving but on the 05 just the back tires seem to spin. even in the snow it was way worse than the 03 x type. Not sure what the differencer would be. Any ideas why the 03 is so much better in snow and mud? Any help would be great.

Are you keeping DSC on or off?

With 2005+ X-Types they changed the AWD system from a viscous coupling to an open differential. The open differential relies on DSC braking individual wheels to transfer power.

pre 2004 cars have viscous coupling in the transfer box and post 2004 dont but have traction control instead. As said in the previous post 2004+ relys on tc braking individual wheels using abs to divert power, no way as near or as good as pre 04. They should of never changed it.

Well on the manual transmission there is no option to turn on or off the dsc or traction control. Not that i know of anyways. and the transfer case bein different makes sense. The abs is not working on the 03 x type so maybe that is part of it too. But i am dissapionted that the 05 is way worse in snow and mud.

If you have coin slots in between the shifter and cup holders where the DSC button would normally be then your car is not equipped with traction control.

Mine is this way also, albeit mine has an automatic tranny. When any one wheel slips, you're stuck just like a 2wd open-diff vehicle. The only saving grace is if the slipping wheel is one of the rear ones, you can gently apply the parking brake to send the power to the front wheels. This works until the front wheels lose traction, then you're SOL.

dsc was available on manual transmissions but only on the fwd 2.1 v6 petrol which i dont think made it to the u.s market. But saying that, its irrelevant anyway because were talking about 4wd's
