Hi everyone.
I've installed pads all round my xtype. All was fine till I had a brake fluid change at the main dealer. Now there's an annoying click from the rear that I can't seem to to get to the bottom of. It only seems to happen when I'm braking under normal circumstances. Has anyone had this happen to them? Bosch brake calipers and the handbrake works a treat. Any ideas. Anyone?

Fluted, I would venture to guess you are getting your brake pads to bind up a little bit. Did you install the thin metal sleeves for the pads to ride on? Those are there to prevent this very sort of thing. Beyond that, you may need the help of someone, but you can get the rear of the car up in the air and remove the rear wheels. Then you can have them apply the brakes and then release them as you watch the calipers. You might be able to see what is the source of the noise and go from there.

well if it happened after it was at the main dealer, maybe you should just call them and ask?? if they ****ed something up they should fix it for ye, or better yet explain what the noise is and maybe it's nota problem

 

After alot of investigation I've found the answer to the annoying click from the rear brakes! After again stripping the brake from where the click emanated from, also checking the suspension bushes etc. I decided that a close inspection of the caliper was the only way. I thoroughly cleaned the caliper after removal. Then by using the handbrake mechanism on the caliper placed the piston under load and hey presto! The smallest weep of fluid raised its head. The leak is that small it could have gone unnoticed for years as there was no loss of braking power. It will probably get worse over time but, now that I know I can order a new part. Without all hassle of labour costs at a garage. Sorted

FlutedBonnet, if you do some looking, you can get a rebuild kit for the caliper. They are like $15 USD and you can tear the caliper apart and put in all new seals. I used to do that when I had my X-Type. The only trick that I will tell you is that you need to also buy a 14mm pentasocket (yes, a 5 pointed socket, not a 6). That is probably another $15 USD. But, you can tear apart the calipers and fix all the issues. I have a write up on what you need to do here. That way you never need to buy a new caliper. My car seemed to go through a rear caliper a year.

 

Thermo. I'll definitely look into a rebuild. It makes sense. Especially when I wish to keep the car as original as possible.
