The side of the ashtray has a plastic peg that moves inside of a track to lock it closed, and then open the next time it is pushed. If that sticks, then it wont lock in the closed position. I would take it apart and clean the track and peg really well, and maybe hit it with some spray lubricant like WD-40. That should solve the problem for you.

Carboy, did you get it fixed? Mine is doing the same. I hesitate to take it apart without guidance. Small plastic things and my mongo hands don't do well together.
