Default Auto headlights not working

So I've only recently acquired my X-Type, and playing with all the controls, I've found my auto-headlights don't work, although the headlights do when manually switched on.

Any suggestions on where to start looking to fix?

On a side note, does the 2005 X-type come with an auto-dimming rear view mirror? I suspect I have one, but it is non-functional.

Thanks in advance!

Stupid answer but you are testing the auto headlights in the dark?
I am sure your mirror is auto dim.

Re the mirror, double check the button on the underneath or rear of the mirror unit itself is pressed to the on position. It is possible to turn off and deactivate the function.

It might be a stupid answer, but always worth ruling out the obvious. And yes, I tested the auto headlights in the dark. I presume the light sensor is in the back of the rear view mirror, hence me wondering if there were some sort of connection between the issues: both light sensing.

I'll try adjusting the button beneath the rear-view mirror and see if there's any change. I've toggled it a few times. Presumably, when it's depressed, it's on auto-dimming mode. Otherwise, is there a manual way to dim the mirror when some inconsiderate person behind doesn't understand the concept of blinding the driver in front with their full beams?

Just revisiting this again.

I read the post about taking the rear view mirror apart, but is it likely to be a fault there in the sensor? If so, how would I tell?

As of now, my rain sensing wipers work (and I suspect the sensor for this would also be in the rear view mirror), but neither the auto headlights nor auto-dipping rear view mirror work.

The mirror is photochromatic, dims from light, darker the brighter the light. The fluid in the mirror has been dubbed "dragon's blood" by Jaguar. If it leaks (does sometimes) it eats everything it touches including plastic. I found a post on a different model, but it should give you enough guidance to help if you decide to try and remove and fix or refurbish your existing one rather than just replacing it.

Here's a removal of an X type post.
