X type 51 plate Battery Light stays on even after new alternator fitted

If the X Types are anything like the S Types you must use an OEM alternator for a replacement. Very common that owners use a big box store replacement and have the problem you are experiencing.

I will notify mods to redirect this thread to the correct subdirectory.

It is not unusual to replace the alternator and find out that wasn't the problem. The X-Type has a problem with the battery cables. First disconnect the cables from the battery and polish both the cable connector and the battery post. Then clean the corrosion from the cable ends with electronic spray cleaner. Then remove the cable at the starter and alternator as well as the ground point and polish and reconnect securely.
Once all that is done give it a go and see if the problem is resolved. If it isn't let it run and go and place your hands near the cables. Is one of them to hot to touch. If so you will need to replace that cable since internally it is severely corroded.

I went through the expensive alternator replacement route as advised by my mechanic but seem to have rectified the issue with new battery cables. See my previous post here:
