Exclamation Bent Inner Tie Rod

I have an 05 Jaguar X-type 3.0 V6 Base model, when it was snowing I lost traction and hit a curb not damaging the body of the car but it did however damage the passenger side front inner tie rod, I took it to a local shop and they gave me a quote of $1600 for a the whole Steering rack and pinion is that the only option I have? And Do I really need to change the whole Steering rack?

I found parts for the inner tie rod and outer tie rod end

a BECK ARNLEY INNER TIE ROD END $40
BECK ARNLEY Outer TIE ROD END $70

DrRed, while I hate to say it, replacing the steering rack is a most likely situation. You can find inner tie rod ends for Jags on e-bay, but as I found out, the X-Types come with 2 different steering racks and they only sell the inners for the one style. Unfortunately, I had the other rack style. It has to do with the length of the inner tie rod end.

Now, I would ask them if they are getting you a brand new steering rack or if they are getting you a good used one. If that is a new one, then that price is about right. If that is a used one, then I would be looking somewhere else for a replacement.

Dr. If you don't like their prices, tell them that you are willing ot buy it yourself and are they willing to install the part if you buy it separately from them. Some places near me will do that (since it is a Jag and they don't want to fight to get the parts) and others have a "no customer parts" rule.

Dr, I know a lot about the X-Type, but when it comes to the steering racks, I am not going to be of much help. If they will bolt into your car, then I say buy the one that you are most happy with. I am not sure what the difference may be between the different steering racks. I would think that they will all have pretty much the same turns to lock ratio (ie, how far you have to turn the steering wheel to make it turn so much). So, really it is coming down to the amount of road feel you get back through the steering linkage. Not sure how much of a difference there might be between the various styles.

He Dr Red,
You do not need a whole rack. the inner and outer rods come out of the rack. You can go to autozone and get yourself a tie rod remover. it slides over the inner rod and unlocks it from the rack. Unless you broke splines in yours I would say yours is fine. If not I have good used ones here for a lot less then what you are paying for a rebuilt one. Let me know as I have done both.

Good Luck,
The Dr!

I got my inner and outer tie rod ends from Rockauto.com very happy with the quality for my 06.
they have the same make as you were quoted for just over 1/2 price
or you could go with the moog for even less.
very easy to change as autozone will rent you the inner tie rod removal tool.
took longer to jack up the car than to change the inner ends and at that price i did both sides inner and outer for just over $80

worth the chance that its all you need in my opinion.

Yeah, actually I ended up dishing out a total of $650 for the Steering rack when I went to test fit an inner tie rod I found out that the 05 Xtype's are a specific length that wasn't available anywhere I looked just like Thermo said my vehicle had the special rack.

I was contemplating doing the risky job by getting parts off a used vehicle but I have a Re-Manufactured one with a 3 year which I felt was a better set since I plan on keeping the car for a bit, besides the steering rack was actually in worse condition then I had thought. Now I know why I got the car for $2500

In your picture #3 your suspension bushing has failed. Not a good thing.

To bend a tie rod like you did you've probably done more damage than you think. Have it checked out by someone who knows or make sure your insurance is paid up.

Sorry Tony_H for the late response yeah, I'm not sure if this is after the fact or was laying dormant but since the cold weather I've noticed some noise such as a whining which is predictably my Driveshaft ( not wheel bearing since the sound goes away after a certain speed ) and it makes a clanking noise which I assume is the Sway bar links
