Default Black smoke when flooring, 2.0D

Hi I have noticed that everytime I put the pedal down I get a gust of black smoke that the car behind me has to go through lol. But what is all that black smoke...? I have a feeling this is something that is causing me to get such low MPG figures for a 2.0 diesel. (About 21MPG urban) My mate gets more or less the same amount of miles as me and he is driving a 2.0 petrol.

That happens with just about any diesel. Normal condition. The black smoke is fuel particulates that have not completely combusted.

I suggest you search the web for more info as this is not a Jaguar specific event.

MOST modern diesels wont puff any smoke. But some of them do. And if they do, its nothing to worry over. Adjust your driving habits. Diesels aren't meant to rev very high (not as high as I recall you speaking in another thread)

I made a mistake in another thread, I usually shift between 1500 to 2000 and when harshly accelerating i go to about 3000.

Generally speaking you are getting more fuel than air, and under hard acceleration that could be the case. How's your air filter look?

Another possiblity is a fuel filter that is clogged. Lastly I would suspect engine timing or another ecu type issue or maybe even an injector problem, but those last few are a bit less likely without throwing a code.

If you have some smokey stacks in the US some consider that "cool." So run some pipes vertically off the back of your X and smoke up.
