Default Blown Engine, 3.0 Sport

So... A few weeks ago I cracked the block due to overheating. The shop says it's "around" $7500 to get a used engine and put it in. I'm unwilling to go that route, however; I don't think the car is worth it.

I'm looking for some opinions. The local jaguar dealership doesn't want it for parts but would give me $1500 or so in trade. I have $2300 or so left on the loan and I'm sure if I went in and got to dealing with them on a car they'd probably agree to pay it off.

The other option is parting it out and selling it over time for parts. Or finding someone that wants a car with no engine. I've no idea what I could make by going that route but it'd seem like I could have the ability to make more that way even thought it'll probably be a pain in the butt.

I've pretty much given up on the idea of fixing it. Though, I suppose, if I found an affordable way to swap motors, I'd consider it.

Any advice?

$7,5k sounds a bit crazy to me. I did not do any special researches but I'm pretty sure you can get a used engine much much much cheaper than you were told by the shop. I reckon you should look around $3k top for everything.

Cheers.

Do this: go on car-part.com and search for your engine. Then, go to somewhere that ISN'T the dealer and have them to a removal and replacement for you. That should cut your costs in half. If it were me doing the removal, I would quote you $2k in labor for this specific engine. I'm sure you can get a quote less than that or around that if you look.

And remember 3.0 replacement engines are also available from the Lincoln LS and Jaguar S-Types.

Shop around for a motor and figure ~$2k labor from an independent shop.

pab, if he is not going to be doing the swap himself, the lincoln ls and s-type engines will be much more labor intensive because they were mounted front to back instead of side to side. I have only seen a difference of about $300 between the xtype engine and the ls engine which he would easily make up in the labor it takes to swap all the old parts over.

Yes, you're right because there are some parts that he will need to move from engine to engine instead of just dropping (or lifting, actually) in a new motor.

It's just something to keep in mind that in a pinch there are other sources for engines.
