I had my brakes "done" earlier this year. The rear passenger wheel also had a new caliper and drum. I had some squealing within a day and took it back. It was fine for a couple of months, then the squealing again and very quickly grinding. Took it back in - they replaced the pads and fixed the rotor. Same thing is happening again. Within a couple of months, the squealing started and in a week's time, grinding. They are telling me that it's the ABS module and it's going to be about $1500.

There are NO abs warning lights coming on and none of the other wheels have any issues. Only the right rear. Does this make sense to anyone? or is the mechanic blowing smoke?

This is a 2005 X-type, 3.0 (non sport) 120,000 miles

 

There are no brake drums at all on an X type. Sounds like a combination of a seized caliper pin and an incompetent mechanic.

 

Bobbimack, noticed your mileage being a bit lower than normal too? From what you are describing, it is sounding like your e-brake lever is freezing up and is causing your e-brake not to release initially, resulting in excessive brake pad wear. Common issue with the X-Types. Replace that caliper and see what you have then. Besides, a caliper is much cheaper than what they are quoting you for a new ABS module.

 

I'd find yourself a new shop. I agree with Thermo that there's a simple mechanical problem here. The X-Type parking brake uses the pads and rotor of the main brake, not a separate drum brake inside the rear rotor as you'll find on other cars. If your parking brake mechanism is stuck engaged then one or both of your rear brakes are going to wear quickly. Here's a YouTube video that may help you:

 

Go with Thermo's advice 1st! but...
Could the other 3 locations need to be bled? Kinda sounds like only that wheel is braking properly.
Or an inexperienced mechanic tried pressing the caliper instead of twisting it back for new pads and broke it.

Could this emergency brake failure (as shown in this vid) also cause both the ABS light and red brake light (lower right side of console) to come on at the same time? That's my issue. Otherwise drives fine - no error codes at all.

 

BobbiMack there is a Jaguar specialist near Windward Pkwy and Ga400 that has a good reputation and I have used them. I normally try to tackle my own basic maintenance because I enjoy it but anything major and this is where I would take it. I had the same problem on my X-type.

The cables (mechanical) for the e-brake (handbrake) corroded, and the cable would not move freely within the sleeve. Tried to lubricate to no avail.
Changed out the cables and problem solved.
The cables go from the middle of the car to each rear wheel. Cheap parts, but somewhat fiddly to change.
