Default Can't open driver door

Morning all.

This morning I went to open the driver side outer door. The handle made a popping sound as I lifted it, then it felt like it wasn't engaging and it would not open the door.

I removed the door panel, assuming it had disconnected at the usual place in that plastic block, but found that it has disconnected behind the outer door handle.

Any advice how to reconnect it? I cannot see how the door handle assembly is removed.

Thanks

Another question would be.. Can the door opening rod detach at the outside handle.. Or is it guaranteed to be broken?
Im still unsure how to remove the handle to check if it is broken or just detached...
If its "possible" to detach it will be worthwhile to take it all apart to check... If not then i would just buy a new handle before disassembly

I was able to remove the rod with the door panel removed, and this attached pic is it.
The plastic connector is not broken, can anyone suggest if there will be a broken part on the handle before i take the window out etc to get to the handle?

I have attached the blow up of the door parts. From the looks of your rod there should be a hole for the rod to go into on the forward top side of the handle. You will need to remove the grommet and insert it in the hole first then the rod and then lock the grommet to the rod.

iownme: This pic shows the rubber grommet and metal rod attach to the door handle. +1 to Vern's assembly order: (1) grommet into the hole of the door handle, (2) metal rod into the hole of the grommet, (3) rotate the grommet until it clips to the metal rod.

Reach into the door with your iPhone and take pictures to 'see' what your fingers are touching. Hopefully you won't see a crack or break in the door handle hole that holds the grommet and metal rod. If the door handle is broken, it likely will detach again until the handle is replaced.

It is a known fault on the handles. I have sold 4 of them.
Let me know I might have another

Hi,
I've got a similar problem. The rod from the door lock to the handle became disconnected at the handle end when I removed then lock which was not working. I can't see any way to reconnect it. There does not appear to be any access. I wonder if removing the window will help, but am reluctant to do so unless there is no other way. Can you help or advise?

I uploaded TSBs to the forum large file area years ago. Gus also has them on his site and seems to have them in order to more easily find them.

JTIS will have service info as well.

Hope this helps the OP and anyone else in the future. I just had this issue in the winter and resolution was replacement of the door latch assembly. Removes with the 3 torx screws on the door jamb, electrical connector and rods (flick the plastic tabs to unlock the rod and remove the rod, not the entire tab w rod as pictured previously).

In some cases it may be the rod deflecting as noted in bulletin XT501-28 attc'd by Motorcarman, usually if the outer handle activates the latch 'most' of the time. In my case I could get it to open if I pulled the handle sharply and straight up. After a while it died completely and required a new latch assembly which I had on hand. Replacement is going strong 6mths later.

Happy trails

Artax
