Yes, the battery cables failing like you are seeing is not uncommon. You will probably need to replace both the positive and negative cables. They are not that expensive and also not that hard to replace. may want to also look at the top of your battery. I bet you will find that you have a crack in the top, leading to the rapid corrosion of the terminals.
