Changing Power Steering Fluid?
Hello everyone! My car is Jaguar X-Type 2006, 2.2 diesel. Yesterday I decided to change power steering fluid because its color is dark black. So the problem is which is the exact type of fluid that must be used? I have read that Dexron 3 must be used, but there are several types of Dexron 3 /mineral or synthetic/. Please help!

Yes indeed, but if you chooese synthethic Dexron III, not mineral, there is possibility to have leaks and even break the pump, because the power steering system is not compatible with that fluid. As far as I know mineral Dexron III is used with older car systems and it is less durable than synthethic Dexron III. Thanks for the reply.

fluid
Hi I used CARLUBE I am sure any branded fluid will do as long as it's to Dexron 3 spec.
The method I used was I sucked up the old fluid till the reservoir was almost empty and replaced it with new. Couple days later did the same. Kept doing this till I had used up the whole litre. I think you can do it in one go if you jack up the front of the car and move the steering from lock to lock several times between fillings,
Hope this helps.
My fluid was awful black when I bought the car!

CaliforniaGirl, use Dexron III. It is compatible with the Dexron IIe. Like others have said, probably best to stick with the mineral based Dexron III just to prevent the little leak that can be formed from running synthetic (the synthetic molecule is smaller than the conventional one and can leak out a smaller hole, hence why it is more prone to leakage).

I used the same Castrol trans fluid that Dell did, works well even though it is not a full synthetic (The Dexron IIe that the manual calls for is a full synthetic).
Since the same PS pump is used in DOZENS of car models with no change from one to another except for external hardware, whatever works successfully in them will work in our cars...the internals are the same.
Think about adding or changing the filter, too. $20 well invested!
