Changing starter on x type

The JTIS workshop manual procedure for Starter Motor removal is too big to add as an attachment. You can download it free from my MediaFire account using this link:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/k9vwdp...rter_Motor.pdf
The first thing it mentions is fitting a 'Powertrain Jack' to allow removal of the support bar:
Members with X-types will be able to advise if it is essential to remove the support bar. If it is, you will have to find an alternative method of safely supporting the weight of the powertrain.

damsel_in_distress,
Pull the battery out and then the battery box. Look back towards the firewall under the throttle body, you will see the starter. There a two bolts that hold the starter to the engine block. I believe you'll need a 15mm to remove these two bolts. 1 above the starter and 1 below the starter. There will also be another bolt holding a wire to the starter. This should take a 10mm to remove.
I removed mine last summer, so I'm going off of memory here. Hope this helps.
Take your starter AND battery to an auto store chain and have them check both. Have them check the amperage on the battery.

Yeah I think that support bar runs from a bracket on the starter over to the transmission mount that is next to the strut tower (right in front of the coolant tank).
So you need to support the transmission from underneath in order to pull the starter. I used a floor jack and a block of wood.
Also Jeeves is right the battery and battery box have to come out or you're just going to aggravate yourself and the starter will still be in the car when you throw the wrench across the garage.

OK. Getting ready to do this on '06, 3.0L automatic.
I can see the starter. And the support bar. And while the support bar looks like it really needs to come out to give room to get the starter out, the battery box is pretty far forward from where the starter is. Battery really needs to come out?
Jag starter $290, Bosch $175... not even sure what's available locally, but Advance has a rebuild for like... $127. I am told that they basically just reuse the case and replace everything else. Will need to do this within the next week or so.
Oh, and what starter are you guys putting in? The Jaguar part seems really high on the price, but I don't want to put junk in there either.

starter removal
Changed mine last year, from rockauto.com
To change remove the battery
Disconnect all the cables to the starter
Loosen the support NUT near starter
Disconnect the 2 mounting nuts
Then wiggle the starter out by going sideways, not much room but works

Just a tip for anybody who needs to know this which is a very important fact but keep in mind this is for the 2004 automatic xtype the bolts that hold the starter on are reverse threaded Took me forever to realize this while I'm trying to figure out why the the Damn thing will not come loose.. for anyone who doesn't know what reverse threaded means that means that you turn to the right to loosen and the left to tighten

also yes the bolts were reverse threaded and those r hard to get out the back one was at least and the front one there was a black plate that the bolt goes through with an open side and since I couldn't get the bolt free I removed the black plate and took the bolt out by hand since it was so loose after taking that plate off
