chirp and knock
This is my first Jaguar. I have always heard how smooth and quiet these cars are and since I have never drove one before I don’t know what is normal and what is not. I posted about a squeaking sound coming from the rear which of course I knew was not normal and had fixed. But there are a few things I heard and don’t know what to think. First, when I hit a bump I hear something like a banging sound coming from the rear of the car. Almost like it is in the trunk, which it is not because I emptied the trunk and it is still there. The sound is something you hear and not feel. My best guess is the rear sway bar bushings. Does that sound right? Has anyone else had this noise I have? Second, I noticed a “chirp” sound when I hit small bumps. It sounds like it is coming from the front. If I am on a slightly bumpy road it goes “chirp…chirp...chirp...” any guess what that could be? Bad shock?? I keep thinking about going to a dealership and driving a 04 X like mine to see what the ride is like. It seems like mine is a bit harsh. I cringe when I am about to hit a pothole. It just sounds so harsh when this happens.
Go to a dealer. I checked with the local import car parts store and they were the same price as the dealer. Or ask jag_genius for a quote. Fortunately for me I never had to buy the parts. Keep in mind your best bet is to get someone that knows what they are doing to ensure you are even buying the right part. I have guessed at the noise my car has and the noice isn't even what I thought it was. This means you think it's the control arm and it ends up beign the sway bar, now instead of you buying a sway bar you bought and installed the control arm and must now buy the sway bar. Check with fjt or jG or a tech on here for the time it should take to replace the item. If you go into the dealer you may only pay an hour labor charge for a control arm and the part is say 220. Thus you should only be paying about $340 for parts and labor. They can give you the exact time it should take a jag mechanic to do the dirty work! Plus they deduct your diagnostic fee from your bill for the fix...

for the rear arms.. it depends.. up here in canada they always seize up and the have to be cut out with a torch soo.. they can be a little more pricey here.. if not sezied they come out in minutes..
If you guys are referring to the trailing arms unless I am missing something again....should be about 5 hours customer pay. Like I said, I may be missing something.
The rear sway bar links or bushings no more than 1/2 hour. Chances of your entire sway bar being bad is pretty slim. End links and bushings are all it normally takes.

it is the rear lower arm as JG says.. I did mine and it fixed all the taxi-cab noises from the rear.....
They are easy to change if all goes well.. JG says he has had some where the bolts are rusted frozen and he has to cut. My car is a high miles Canadian, car.. and I was able to do my arms at home easily. I used a decent socket and a breaker bar to get the bolts out.
It is a simple JOB, a single bolt at each end of the arm.
FJT,,, we are referring to the 10 in long bent tubular arm that has a swivel joint at one end and a rubber bushing at the other. the swivel joint gets worn and rattly...
