Question Cigarette Lighter help

I know this is kinda a common problem but can't seem to find an answer to my specific problem. My cigarette light works, my lighter works and gets red, but my cigarette outlet will not charge a device. Any ideas out there? No penies in it or anything like that. I checked the wires and they are fine. Like I said it works for everything besides charging a device. And I've used two different style usb outlets and still nothing.

I have seen this a number of time where the socket in the car is just not right for many plugs. If the plug fits snugly into the socket then the problem is the center (+) point.

If you look into the socket you may see a tab that you can bend up a bit, make sure you remove the fuse before doing any bending in there.

If you look at the plugs you may be able to add some solder onto the end to make it longer. Many of the plugs are very poorly made. You can buy replacement ones of high quality that may work better.

Ok, I'll look at the center tab tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!

It helps to have a USB cigarette adapter with an LED power light - tells you when it's making good contact with the center + tab.

SIMPLE FIX.....Put the damn phone down, turn it off, get in touch with the real world around you and drive...

My phone charge lasts 3 to 4 days before it needs recharging and that gets done at night on the kitchen counter, while I'm asleep.

Who said anything about a cell phone? How about when I need to use my gps unit for an area that isn't known to me to ensure safe driving?! Smdh, ^^ this guy

Anyways, thanks to all that helped! The problem was simple and easy to fix. Turns out that the center copper "button" contact was corroded. After taking the lighter socket out and cleaning the center contact to a bright copper it now works agin

Dpk, go sit on a toilet plunger.

GPS..right...I was born at night, but not last night...Drivers like you can't breathe without that damn phone in your hand..2/3's of your concentration is on the phone texting, talking, ect, and not on driving.

Sit on a toilet Plunger..HAHA that's a good one...must be the expression in high school these days..

Is this guy for real? Nothing better to do except troll a thread? Also, I didn't realize you were born, I thought people like you crawled out from under a rock. Sounds like the guy that's banging your wife is a texting driver, causing such hostility from you.

Glad to hear that you have if fixed. I only use mine for GPS. I can't believe that DPK lasted long enough on here to become a "veteran member" with comments like that.

Not sure why that is so hard to believe. I used the GPS on my phone lots of times in the car and when doing so it would drain the battery pretty quick. Or I like to golf a lot and use apps on my phone for distances. That, too, would drain the battery pretty quick and I would always charge it on my ride home. I'm sure their are a bunch of other reasons someone might want to use the cigar lighter for charging. Seeing as there was no mention in the post about talking/texting while driving I can't fathom why you would make the leap to KNOW his motivation. From my reading it just seems like an unprovoked attack we rarely see here.

DPK's posts are for the most part upbeat and helpful. We all have a bad day now and then, particularly when stressed. I don't presume to understand what's behind DPK's negative posts in this thread, but give the benefit of doubt and look forward to more of his positive posts.

Look, I sincerely apologize to Cory..I was having a bad day and I shouldn't of taken it out here...I was nearly run off the road that day by a punk teenager in a fancy Benz with a phone between his legs texting...Then the sh!thead flipped me off as I was sounding my horn, I just wanted to ring his neck..

Again I'm sorry and especially if I was condescending and assumed all people drive carelessly and live on their damn phones.

It won't happen again..Cory No hard feelings I hope, I'm really not that kind of an ******* as I sounded....Glad you fixed your lighter holder thingy..

I'm a 30 yo Infantry Vet. Served in Afghanistan, Kunar providence in 2008. I know about bad days. My issues with my cigarette lighter were manly bc I have a TomTom that's at least 5 years old. It won't hold a charge for more then ten minutes if it's not plugged in. I make a lot of purchases in places I'm not familiar with when I'm not out of town for work. This has always been a helpful place for issues with my car. No worries, bad days happen.
