Default Clutch Replacement Advice

Hello my friends,

Next week I will be putting in a new clutch kit from the original manufacturer in my Cat.

I have read the factory and Haynes manuals gaining very little knowledge.

I have watched the two Youtube videos I found. One was all in fast-forward (eeekkk) and the other one was ok. I will be just dropping the frame and not the motor.

I have my lift cleaned off and my transmission jack ready with my OX/acetylene torch and plasma cutter on stand-by.

I hope someone can give me some advice from when they did this job.

Prayers and crossed fingers are welcomed too...

When I attended NP00 (New Product 2000) the intro to the X400 training class we were instructed to remove the entire powertrain on a special table/jack that was sold to the dealer.

I NEVER used it because I found it was easier to remove the gearbox like a VW water cooled (Jetta,Golf etc.) or Honda transverse setup.

Remove the subframe. Loosen the gearbox side and tilt it down on an angle until it clears the inner wheel structure.
Trans jack under the gearbox and remove bell housing fasteners. Pull the gearbox and perform whatever you need to do.(auto or manual)

We got a TSB a few years later on a 'modified' procedure.
The TSB is for the JATCO but the steps are similar for the manual.

Bob thank you for the great input. I did not think to look up info on automatic removal as many of the same things will be done.

Questions:

Do I need to make some kind of top motor support?

When removing the 3 strut top securing nuts do I need to mark the placement as I have seen larger holes that use this for alignment settings?

The video called for the removal of the transfer case, Any precautions/tips?

I remove the left mount and lower the left side (gearbox) until it clears.(threaded rods)

DO NOT REMOVE THE 'THROUGH SHAFT' INSIDE THE TRANSFER CASE.

The gearbox removal TSB describes the danger of tearing the seal if the shaft is removed more than the specified distance.

Can I just confirm, if I understand this correctly, motorcarman?
If I intend to swap the transmission, I don't have to remove the engine with the transmission attached first form the X-Type?
And it is easier, too, to leave the engine in the X-Type when intending to swap the transmission?
I am asking as this is probably one my my next projects...

Yes Peter you can leave the motor in. Search Youtube for "Jaguar x type clutch" to see it done.

I will be doing this in about a week.

Replacing a clutch kit in a vehicle can be a challenging task, but with the right preparation and guidance, you can successfully complete the job. Here are some tips and advice to help you with the clutch replacement:
  1. Make sure you have all the necessary tools and equipment: Besides the lift, transmission jack, and torch/cutter you mentioned, ensure you have a good set of socket wrenches, screwdrivers, pry bars, and any specialized tools specific to your vehicle's clutch replacement.
  2. Take your time and follow a systematic approach: Before starting the job, review the factory and Haynes manuals again to familiarize yourself with the steps involved. It's essential to have a clear understanding of the process before you begin.
  3. Watch detailed video tutorials: While the fast-forward video might not have been helpful, continue searching for other video tutorials that provide a step-by-step guide at a normal pace. Pay attention to the specific make and model of your vehicle if available.
  4. Organize your workspace: Ensure your work area is clean, well-lit, and organized. Keep all the necessary tools and parts within reach to avoid unnecessary delays and frustration.
  5. Take pictures and label components: Before disassembling anything, take pictures or make notes of the connections and arrangements of various components. This will help you during reassembly.
  6. Be cautious with electrical and fuel connections: Before removing any components, disconnect the battery and be careful when dealing with fuel lines or electrical connections. Follow safety precautions to prevent accidents.
  7. Seek advice from experienced individuals: Reach out to online forums or communities specific to your vehicle make and model. Many experienced enthusiasts or mechanics are willing to share their knowledge and offer valuable advice based on their own clutch replacement experiences.
  8. Patience and perseverance: Clutch replacements can be time-consuming and challenging, especially for the first-timers. Stay patient, take breaks if needed, and double-check your work at each step to ensure everything is done correctly.
Remember, if you encounter any difficulties or doubts during the process, it's best to consult a professional mechanic or seek guidance from individuals with expertise in your specific vehicle model. Good luck with your clutch replacement, and may everything go smoothly for you!
