Default Code P1638 - will not start

I am just about to trash my X-type 2005 3.0 as it stopped working without a reason.

I used it on a very hot day in August here in Houston 45 Celsius. Had it parked outside while working. Got back home and parked it. Then three days later it would not start.
Al wipers, lights and radio are working. The battery is new.

Code reader sends out P1638. Got another used engine computer and it's still not working.

Hopefully someone will be able to help me out.

Albert

Albert,

I've copied your issue to X-Type forum for advice from members with the same model.

You seem to have lost CAN communications between the ECM and your instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster does sometimes get some poor solder joints on the main connector pins, so you might want to start by removing the instrument cluster, opening it and checking for fractured solder joints there.

Reviving an old thread, I know. I had a gearbox fault, root cause was corrosion in the TCM connections (I have the 32 bit version so 2 connectors, both had obvious corrosion on a few pins). I looked inside the TCM and it looks pristine so I cleaned up the connector pins with very fine sand paper, a little compressed air, and electrical contact cleaner. I took it for a spin when I was done and it ran perfectly. Transmission shifting smoother than ever.

BUT, I now have a CEL with code P1638. My first guess is I have the same issue that caused the TCM problem, namely water leaking from the cowl onto the wiring harness creating some corroded connections maybe in the instrument cluster? I am concerned about Mark's post above indicating bad solder joints in the cluster. Are there common failure points I should be looking at once I get the cluster out?

nailed it: INST failure

Think I'll start a new thread on taking the instrument cluster apart if I can't find anything after I do some searching here on this forum.
