Code P1796, Help
I hooked up the OBII scanner up to the Jag because the check engine light came on and got the code P1796, which indicates a kick down switch circuit malfunction, can anyone tell me what needs to be done to correct this problem?

"A diagnostic system for watching the sound operation of a kickdown switch in an automotive vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission adapted to be prohibited from operating at the highest speed stage according to the operation of the kickdown switch, the system including a comparator which compares an output signal from a throttle opening sensor corresponding to the depression of the accelerator pedal of the vehicle and an output signal from the kickdown switch, and generates a warning signal when the two output signals are not correlated with one another in a predetermined mutual relation so as to inform the driver of a malfunction of the kickdown switch. "
Well, im just glad that made complete sense.

hmm, wonder why such different interpretation of the codes?
I know racer has posted the list he uses... where did smokinjag get the kick down info?

My bad, you must have an 04 or 05 X type with that code....
Book say's it's a CAN network fault.
Wire in CAN network malfunction.
Sounds like a bad wire from the trans to ECM....I can't get any more info....sorry

do we have agreement on what this code means?
if it is for kickdown I am quite useless.... I have a manual transmission.
Since the X-type is drive by wire on the accelerator, I would be tempted to unlpug the wires from the pedal it self and also the throttle housing.
I would make sure the wire connections are good. I would follow the wires as far as i could and check for any wire damage.
At some point the obvious like the fuses should be checked.
I would also disconnect the battery and re-set whatever that resets..

Hello from Calgary Canada
I have just bought a 2004 x type Jaguar 2.5 L automatic and in the two hours I have driven it my check engine light went on. I have no ability to kick down at high speed and I have a code P 1796 and P0 333. i tried to reset codes but my cheap Autel code reader would not clear the codes. When I tried to reset the codes. The transmission failsafe came on and I just had 4th gear. When I removed code reader and let sit then re started car the car was not in failsafe mode and shifted fine check engine light was still on however.
Transmission failsafe only came on again when I tried to reset codes with reader. I did notice the following when I drove the car after I started the car again back to normal with Check engine light up shifting no problem but no kick down for fast acceleration. down shifting was a littler erratic however.
i have a 2004 but It was and early on so I am wondering if it is kick down switch as I have this symptom.
Any help is appreciated
