xtype62, must you replace it immediately and not drive the car with this code. No. Is the repair going to possibly be more expensive the longer you drive with the code locked in, most likely. So, now the question is how long do you want to drive with the code in risking hurting other parts of the car (specifically the catalytic converter). I would say to first start with replacing the affected O2 sensor and seeing what you have then. Replacing an O2 sensor isn't all that hard and if you know where to look, it isn't all that expensive either (I think I spent like $50 USD on an O2 sensor for my X-type). I spent another $20 on the special tool for removing the sensor (I highly recommend it as it works much better than the O2 sensor sockets).

The bank 1 upstream sensor is located on the top of the exhaust at the side of the engine next to the passenger compartment. On the back wall you should see a black plug and a grey plug side by side. The grey plug is the upstream sensor. You can follow the cable back to the sensor. Take a look at the link below for some pictures of the plugs and their location. The pictures also show the sensor tool required for installation.
It is possible to remove the sensor without removing the intake manifold but you will probably also need a "crow's foot wrench" to break it free.

Much easier from above. The big trick is you want to remove the vacuum line running to the brake booster out of the way. This will open up a hole from near the brake booster to the back side of the engine. This will give you room to stick your arm down in there and pull out the O2 sensor. It looks hard, but it isn't. The big trick is getting the correct tool to break the O2 sensor loose. After getting it loose, the rest is a piece of cake. This is where the correct tool can make it super simple or a real PITA.

xtype62, stick with a brand name (say Bosch or Denso) and get the sensor with the plug already done for you, then you will be fine. You get some off-name brand or you start having to do the wiring yourself (unless you understand wiring pretty well), the possibility of having issues with the new one go up greatly.
As for finding the part in your price range, should not be a big problem. Places like E-bay have a wide selection and should make finding what you want fairly easy. There are a few listings with the upstream sensor for $60 USD coming out of China. Should be about the same price for you in England.

In my previous post I put in a link with photo's. I'll put it in again down below. Follow the linnk to a forum thread with pictures of the connector for the upstream bank 1 sensor. Once you locate the plug on the firewall you can follow the wire to the correct sensor. It is a fairly short wire.

Avern, if you look at a side of the motor, you will see where the catalytic converters are mounted pretty much to the side of the motor (integral part of the exhaust manifold). The sensor up near the motor is referred to as the upstream (or #1) sensor. The other is much lower on the motor and downstream of the catalytic converter. This is the downstream (or #2) sensor. Do not confuse the #1 and #2 sensors with Bank1 and Bank2. The Bank refers to the side of the engine, the # refers to whether it is near the exhaust ports or much further down the exhaust piping. You may also see the O2 sensors referred to as say 2/1. This would mean that the O2 sensor is on Bank 2, but is the upstream (#1) sensor.
