Default Cold Air Blowing from Steering Wheel Column - 2002 X-Type

This issue may not bother most people but since the weather can drop to -40c here in Canada, I can say it bothers me very much.

There is air that blows into the car from the space where you find the lever to adjust the steering wheel (on the bottom of the steering column). It is a steady flow of air that seems to come directly from outside. It doesn't make any difference if the temperature control is set to recirculate or if the heat is on full blast or even if the air conditioning is on. It doesn't matter what speed I travel or if I am sitting at a red light the flow is continuous and constant. It doesn't blow terribly hard but enough to be bothersome and uncomfortable in cool and cold weather.

I have an appointment next week to change all the flap actuators. It would be nice to have this issue resolved at the same time as I suspect there is no actuator for the steering column. lol

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Louise, I would venture to guess that you either have a hole in the side of the A/C column (large column behind the radio that blows air out the top of the dash) or the connection for the dash vents is not made up correctly and it is blowing inside the dash and it just happens to blow out. Could also be the tube that feeds the vent between the steering wheel and door has a hole in it and it is blowing right on that opening.

The best thing that I can tell you is to push the seat back as far as it will go and run your hand up behind the dash. See if you can feel where the air is blowing and then follow it back to its source. Going to take a little bit of work bending your arm to reach various places, but you can do it. Granted, may ponder removing the trim from under the steering wheel and going after it that way, but then, you still have to reach around the steering column to reach back far enough.

Thank you so much Chris.

I will give that a go, or better yet my mechanic will. I will update if the issue gets resolved and hopefully it does before the winter.

Lol Thermo, unless the air infiltration is only occurring when the car is moving. Now that would be something to see! How do I steer with my feet while fiddling around under the dash?

Dell, she specifically states that she gets the breeze even with the car sitting still. Should not be hard to have your feet sticking out the door with it in park. Granted, I am just picturing what an officer would say if your feet were hanging out the windows as you were driving down the road. Might get really interesting if there was 2 people in the seat. LMAO.
