Loose Steering Column?
Again, thank you guys in welcoming me to the board and graciously answering my questions. I have another question about my 2002 XJR (almost 92K miles). I have noticed that the steering wheel has about a 1/2 inch play in it. I can shake the steering wheel, and although the up/ down (tilt) function of the steering wheel works fine, the in/out (telescoping) function seems to not be working. I can hear the steering movement motor running, but it won't telescope and there is some play in the steering column, meaning I can shake the whole steering wheel and column at a stand-still.
Thanks in advance!

TB

i have a very similar problem that i am living with...but for me it is the up and down that doesnt work...i did check all my steering column bolts and they were tight...i think the play is normal and the potentionmeters might be dirty
Sean, i can only speak for myself... but yes I have used it. There are fixes out there for the tilt/telescoping function, but my more pressing issue is the fact theat my steering wheel and column is actually loose.
OK, in which plane does it move? side to side, or up and down. The column is secured to the dash brace with two bolts.
To get at these two bolts to nip them up is
1. removal of the lower and upper steering cowls (4 phillips screws)
2. removal of the wood trim, grasp firmly and pull (held with clips)
3. removal of the instrument cluster, (4 phillips) at each corner of the black shroud.
4. access to the 2x8/10mm bolts (red), tighten up, if still movement, it's the upper brace bolts (blue), may need an extension and u.j adapter for the socket to get at these.
The picture is r.h.d car, but the same assembly for l.h.d. You're aiming to tighten the two bolts at the column joint. While in there, you can also drop the column and change the knackered column motor, just a suggestion.
Hope this helps
