Control Arm Broke
Wife hit two curbs and damaged both rims and broke what I believe is the control arm on the front left side. I'm mechanicly inclined and don't want to spend $$$$$ at Jag dealer. Ialready got wheels from Fleabay which won't be here untill Jan.3. How difficult to change, tools needed, best parts? The car is already up on jack stands in my garage and I've included picture of broken part. Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

RE: Control Arm Broke
Thanks for your reply. Do you know if there are any special tools? I've managed to move the top bolt but it just spins in the bolt hole. The bolt must somehow be held in place so just the nut will move. There is aplaceon the end of the bolt for hex rench. Samething on the bottom but the whole thing is facing away from me and even more difficult.

RE: Control Arm Broke
As a home repair you might be able to cut the bolt(or nut)carefully with a jig saw. or a dremel, or grinder disc. try not to damage the flat surface the nut tightens on.
I dont know how that could have broken, since the ends of the link are both on ball joints. It looks like it was brokem by pure tension, from one wheel violently going up while the other wheel was going down. Did she hit the curb head on?
If that is the case, then the control arms are probably ok, the wheelbearing might have been strained, time will tell.

Well I've managed to get both off. Its all a trick, you must first turnboth the nut and bolt so they both turn freely in the bolt hole. I used a ratchet and 15mm socket to break it free. Then just put a 15mm rench on the nut, insert the correct size hex rench and turn, off it came.
The most amazing thing is the control arm is made out of plastic, very hard but just plastic. I'm off to the jaguar dealer to see how much they sell plastic control arms for!

RE: Control Arm Broke
Thanks guys for all the input. Yes its correct it was never the control arm, my bad. It was the roll bar/sway bar Link, which is nothing more than a plastic strap. When I talk to a awd alignment shop they laughed about it and said sometimes they don't even replace them, they're a joke. I don't know so I ordered it.
Markc, I searched google for the part which is listed on my jag part receipt, c2s39552and found nothing. Do you have the link for part you found?

Hooutoo,
I Googled "Jaguar sway bar link", not the Jag part number. Here is a link...
http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/de...3-1657770.html
This part apparantly fits X-types from 02 throu 07.
I did a little more searching and found that Rockauto.com also lists the front sway bar link for about $71. This one actually looks like it is made of plastic.

A broken link will not pass safety inspection in Pennsylvania (nor anywhere else vehicle safety inspections are required) and handling would surely be degraded. Replacing it is the only way to go.

RE: Control Arm Broke
you will probably need a 4 wheel alignment. I got mine from Firestone. i'm in the northeast US. it cost me $120 for a lifetime of wheel alignments as long as I own my jaguar. I thought this was a great deal. Its supposedly till the end of this month but i'm sure if you ask, they will extend this offer. You can go as many times as you want and for me in the Northeast, its a blessing with all the damm potholes.

RE: Control Arm Broke
my original links were metal, not plastic, and I replaced them both with metal ones from an AUDI that were within a couple of mm of the same lenght. The shop that I was at had a large selection of links and we just matched up the closest that were there.
I guess Jag changed to plastic along the way, not so bad really. Alsokeep in mind the broken one in this post was after a crash..... not broken from everyday use.

Yeah thats what I was going to say! I mean they may not be flawless at engineering the part but I'm sure if there were a problem with it going bad or it being unsafe to put plastic they wouldn't...can't really engineer a car for hitting things! Shoot my car can barely handle the pot holes here let alone curbs!
