I need to replace the front drivers side CV axle on my 2002 jaguar x-type, 120k, auto, nonsport. On the front of the jag we just replaced the control arms, hub bearings, spindles, tye rod bushings, and sway bar links. Carelessly tore the inner cv boot when putting it back together.

If I could ask:
Does the trans fluid need to be drained first?
Is there a shroud/gasket ring involved?
Are there any other special considerations?

Advice or experience would be grealty appreciated. Thanks, Mike

The left side is easy. Just pop it out. You'll get some fluid leak out. Try to figure how much and replace it. There are some recent post on refilling fluid. Use the search tools. There are several threads on this topic.

If you have the JTIS it has detail procedure. I believe the download is a sticky at the top of this forum.

 

By the way the right side cv joint... an entirely different beast. Search my posts for that one. Don't touch if you don't have to.

 

Thanks for the help Alfa Veloce! We trashed the seal, $21 at jag dealer, but everything else went o.k. The trans fluid is 50% brown, changing it next.

 

How do you know when the CV axel(s) needs replacement? What are the symptoms? Thanks.

 

Jaguar1976 and I had the same symptom. We tore up the rubber boot doing unrelated maintenance. It is easier and perhaps surprisingly no more expensive to just replace the axle when you do that. You have to pull it off the car to renew the boot anyway.

Other signs: the most common is a clicking sound in tight turns, especially at slow speed. Worn rubber boots. Any rotational play in the axle or in and out play beyond a tiny bit.

Don't tackle the right side axle until you read thoroughly on it. I've done one and it's a pain.
