CV Boot question
What kind of fluid does the cv boot have in it and where does it come from?
Mine has a small hole in it and was leaking a tiny bit.
Looks like a goldish color for the fluid..
anyone know what it is and if I have to fill it?
suspensions are one of my weak areas..

The cv joints use grease. Is it the color of coffee with cream?
That means water (and dirt)is getting into your CV joint via the small
hole and that is not good. You need to replace the CV boot and
and regrease the joint before putting the new boot on. Hopefully
there are split boots available to do this. Otherwise you need to
pull the halfshaft to replace the boot. The other potential issue
is you have contamiantion in the Joint and if you don't get it all
out and seal it up with a new boot the joint may fail later and
need replacing.
Which shaft has the hole on the boot? You want to try and get
it fixed soon as you don't want water and dirt getting in as it
will destroy the CV joint and you will have to replace the joint
if available or the whole half shaft. I know you can get outer
rear CV joints but I do not know about the others??? It comes
with 2 packets of grease a new boot and the clamps. They are
not split boots so the shaft needs to be pulled to replace it.
A wholenew rear half shaft is $830 but the other CV joint is
only $170. Not sure about front shafts or joints. It can ran
into a lot of work and $$$ just for torn boot. Here in Maine a
car can be failed for its safety inspection for a torn boot!
