Default Diagnosing defective wheel bearings, transfer case

2002 2.5 A/T with 115k miles

Would it be possible to put the gear in 'D'rive to spin the wheels at low speed while the car is raised?

I'm bringing the car back to the shop tomorrow for brake issues. While the shop owner test drove the car yesterday, he noticed a grinding noise which he suspected was due to defective wheel bearings. i told him that his guys replaced them at the same time the brakes (pads and rotors) were done.

I want to suggest to them to spin the wheels while the car is raised (if it's even possible), and maybe they can isolate the grinding noise. One member suggested that the prop shaft bearings may be at fault and not necessarily the transfer case.

I'm trying to not spend more money than I should, which I suspect the wheel bearings initially replaced were.

Thank you in advance for all the input/help.

That raises a pretty good question, what is the correct way to diagnose a failing TC? I took my car to the dealer because I heard something that sounded like a bad wheel bearing. The dealer identified it as a bad TC.

How did they do that? Did they drive the car around and listen with a more practiced ear than mine? Did they run the car on a lift and listen to it from below? Or, did they do something else?

I'll suggest running the car in gear while raised to the guys at the shop tomorrow and see how they feel about it. If they agree, hopefully they can try listening to the suspect areas and maybe rule out the more expensive repairs.

I just remembered that during my last visit (brakes) to the same auto repair shop, I attempted to spin the right front wheel manually (car raised) to see if I can simulate the brakes squeak. I noticed that the rear right wheel also started to spin. 'Just thought I bring it up.
