rm1111, your car DOES NOT have a distributor cap. Your car uses what is called Coil On Plug (COP). In short, the job that the distributor would do is now done by the engine computer (ECU) and can be more precisely controlled and varied using more values to meet max efficiency over many different situations.

I think only GMC had cars/trucks/SUV with points, distributors, carburetors up to 2006(?) on the larger V8 which GMC seemed at the time to be lagging behind in more modern adoption options.

Reason:
Emissions, reliability and performance. And by performance I don't just mean more power from the engine, I mean EFI and electronic ignition systems are better at what they're supposed to do.

EFI systems for example can have a coolant temperature and intake air temperature sensor and adjust the mixture accordingly. Carbs either need a manual choke to create a richer mixture or a somewhat complicated and not terribly reliable mechanical temperature adjustment system. EFI also doesn't have problems with icing or tiny mechanical parts gumming up.

Electronic ignition systems offer more precise control over the timing and can take into account variables such as temperature and knocking. With a mechanical ignition system you can't control for these factors and have to run more conservative timing to work in a worst case scenario.

Hi rm1111,

As you've discovered, this forum is a great resource with friendly, knowledgeable members who are happy to help.

There is also a wealth of Jaguar factory service documentation available for download. For example, see these links:

Jaguar X-Type "HOW TO" Quick Links

Jaguar X-Type Workshop Manual and Other Resources

Jaguar X-Type Electrical Guides and DTC Summaries

Cheers,

Don
